Default Awesome Sega Controller, compatible with PS3!!!

I don't know how many of you already know these exist (I just recently found out about them myself), but they are pretty cool...

These are USB-based Sega Controllers, based around the design of the Japanese & later 2nd edition US Sega Saturn Controllers.

While the Saturn wasn't a very successful system in the US, I still liked it a lot, and the controllers for it were awesome, especially for fighting games.

These USB versions are from Asia. They were never released directly in the US. But, they can be purchased on ebay. I just got two of them for about $30 each, including shipping. They were shipped to me from Hong Kong, and the shipping time wasn't too bad.

They were designed to mainly work with PCs and MACs, but they are also compatible with PS3. Mine just showed up yesterday. I promptly hooked one up to my PS3 and started playing Street Fighter IV, and it worked great. It is perfect for the Street Fighter games, or that recent Sonic Ultimate Genesis Collection.

They come in a few colors. I got 2 black ones. But there is a white version (as shown in one of my pics), and a gray version. There may be more, but these are the ones I am aware of.

As you can see from the pics, there are 6 "face" buttons. The top 3 are labeled X, Y, Z, and the bottom 3 are A, B, C.

X and Y are the Square and Triangle Buttons. A and B are the X and Circle buttons. Z and C are L2 and R2. And the L and R buttons on this controller are L1 and R1. The start button is, of course, the start button.

The only downsides to this controller are that it is wired, which stinks, and that there is no central PS button. So, you will need to keep a regular PS3 controller or your Blu-Ray remote handy to get the the main system menu using the PS button. There is no select button either, but most games let you choose options with the directional pad anyway, so that's not a big deal.

I know that there are some street figher based pads out there now with a similar lay out. I haven't tried the PS3 versions, but I do have some of the ones from PS2 from years ago, and while they were nice, They were just never as good as the Saturn controller to me for those types of games.

The beauty part is that for anyone with backwards compatible PS3's, they can use these with older games from the previous systems.

I have yet to test how this works with 2 controllers hooked up. I hope that it recognizes one as player 1 and player 2, but I am not yet sure. I will try that out tonight.

These are also supposedly compatible with Xbox 360, for you multi-console owners. I also have a 360, but have yet to test this out. I will also try this out tonight and post an update with that info as well.

So, for those of you who can live with the fact that these are wired controllers, I highly recommend them!

I wonder if its compatable with the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis Collection? That would just bring back the nostalgic factor even further than before.

best controller was the dreamcast

playing nfl 2k you could pick your plays on the VMU unit to the other person had NO CLUE what you were doing.

im surprised no 'next gen' system has put an lcd in the controller yet

use it for a rear view mirror.

These controllers should work with any games that don't require the use of the analog sticks or the tilt feature, and I believe that collection falls under that category.

The only catch is that you may have to go to the options menu to make sure the controls are set up correctly. That's what I had to do for SF4.

I'd have to double check, but I'm pretty sure the Genesis collection lets you format the buttons as needed.

I went ahead and bought this controller. I got it from here. Let me tell you, it was worth every penny. This is the one of the best controllers ever made. So happy I got it.

While I like the VMU, very innovative and a great feature. The core DC controller was horrible, d-pad was horrible just like the 360's dpad.

I agree though, the VMU style display should come back, that was awesome!

Man, if Sega were releasing Sega Saturn classics instead of Dreamcast, I'd run to buy one now.

no way! The Saturn controller was the best controller. Dreamcast's controller doesn't even rank in the Top 5. The LCD screen was cool though (but really, in today's day and age, it's functionality would be limited)

You're being far too kind. It's so wretched that I would rank it with the MadCatz stuff, i.e. at the very bottom. I hated the VMU, the RumblePak, the weight distribution, the D-pad, the analog stick - hated everything.

I try to stay away from third-party stuff, so other than nostalgia, I don't think I'll be picking up the USB-based Sega Controller.

I was being kind, you're right. In addition to what you said, the way the buttons stuck out (aside from the d-pad which you already mentioned) was horrible for certain types of games (e.g., fighting)

My left thumb can attest to this (took me months for the callus on my thumb and blister on my left hand to heal once I stopped playing SoulCalibur; after those healed, I just packed away my Dreamcast and resumed gaming on the PSOne, while waiting for the PS2's launch).

Woohoo! Old thread resurrection!

One thing that should be noted that I didn't discover until the last time I posted in this thread, these controllers do not seem to work with PS2 games (if you have an older PS3 that plays PS2 games). They do work fine with PS3 games and marketplace games (and I think they work fine with PS1 games as well, but I would have to double check on that), but not so much with PS2 games.

Yeah, I did love the VMU. As a separate mini-game thing, it was fail, but win on the memory card and play calling thing.

I was always hoping the PSP would evolve into a super Playstation controller, myself. Needs dual analogs, of course, and top bumper buttons as well as triggers and the requisite dpad, Square, Triangle, circle, etc.
