Default Does anyone else use the PS3 as a computer?

I currently am running Yellow Dog Linux for the PS3, I've removed the 60gb hdd and am running a 500 gb external hdd through a modified 7 pin sata cable? What have you done, or tried doing

I haven't gotten around to doing mine yet. It's still too new, and I hold it in too high of regard since it's also my blu-ray player - for that reason I probably never will unless I pick up a BD standalone.

Im going to look into the hard drive mod soon as the warranty is up. Would be sweet to install OS X tiger on PS3 and run it like my Macbook Pro.

Access to the hdd for removal & replacement is explained in your owners manual. the cable just plugs into the connection your current hdd uses the external hdd you use should be one with it's own power supply. Not having the hdd generating heat is probably a side benefit. If I had to I could probably reinstall my old hdd.

Thanks for the post. I Think when I saw that before it seemed to not be available, this may have changed though. but I can tell you that what I've done looks cleaner I Have just one wire coming out of the hdd cover. My current external hdd is a western digital with esata connection on back, it's black with two blue circles of light.

I'm not using it for Linux (yet) but I expanded the internal drive to 120GB and added an external 500GB USB drive for mass storage.

My western digital 500 gb esata hdd was first hooked up to the PS3 by usb but I didn't like the lack of control over my pictures, music, videos and games. I will be upgrading my hdd soon I am looking for a 2 bay external hdd with built-in raid controller. Install 2 750 gb hdd's running in mirrored setting. faster access and data protection.
