NOTE: I know that I have not posted much but I felt that I needed to voice my discontent with those of you jumping back on the fence. Before you say that I am voicing my discontent because I am pro-Blu-ray, this is an argument about repercussions you make as a consumer in the free market, not because you choose one format or the other. Of course, this is targeted towards Blu-Ray consumers since this is a Blu-Ray forum.
By jumping back on the fence you lose your voice in the free market, therefore indirectly prolonging the format war that you wanted to escape. Most of you are "jumping the ship" because "1" major studio was paid to go exclusive to HD-DVD (or because of "1" movie that you most probably will forget about in 10-15 years). You are basically allowing "1" major studio's actions to dictate your choices as an "informed" consumer. You have relinquished your voice to express which format you want as a consumer. In a sense, you have given up your freedom as a consumer in a free market by allowing someone else to tell you what you should consume. Simply put, its like complaining about a president/prime minister/party that is in office because they are not doing a good job and that other candidate(s) would have been a better choice. The only dilemma is the fact that you did not make your voice heard because you chose not to follow your convictions and cast your vote. By no means am I trying to convince you to go pro Blu-Ray. If you, as an informed consumer, feel that HD-DVD is a format that you would like to suppor then please do so. Just do not waver in your decision. By posting your so-called neutrality you are spreading FUD (in this case, a strong emphasis on Fear and Uncertainty) and it is detrimental to the decision-making process so many of the new visitors to this forum are trying to make. It's also an attempt to make yourself feel better when people post consoling messages so that you can convince yourself that you have made the best choice. If you can't stand the heat, you shouldn't have stepped into the kitchen in the first place. Quietly slip back into the shadows and let the consumer pioneers make their voices heard. |

Beta was in a very different time, and not really even close to the same situation. Beta lost largely due to the longer home recording time of VHS vs. Beta . . . not really a concern for most people these days, especially with DVRs and the existing capability to burn content on DVD's (sufficient for most, and with High Def DVR's, probably less than an afterthought for those into Blu-ray) . . . It's not like the PS3, a very widely used player, is going to stop working if (big if) HD DVD takes the whole cake.

I believe what he is trying to say is, if you want to step out of the ring, fine. We just don't need thread after thread of folks saying they're going neutral or going back to the fence. For new people looking here for information as to what format to support, they may be filled with U. and D. when they see thread after thread of people stepping out.

Actually, after giving this some more thought... I AM being a *****. A little financial bump in the road and I choose to ditch Blu-ray? What was I thinking? I am VERY upset about Paramount but I'm not going to quit supporting what I believe will be the winning format. I can not do it at a large level... but I can certainly afford 2 or 3 titles per month. I'm sorry I "lost my way" and I hope you guys can understand where I my head was at... I pledge here and now that unless things start to dramatically favor hd dvd, I will remain loyal to Blu-ray. I just have to do it on a smaller scale than before.
I'm posting this on my original "fence" thread as well. |

And I have no quarrels against you speaking your mind, this is a public forum after all. It just doesn't bode well if everyone that choses this path starts a new thread on the topic, just find one already started and protest away. We are not attempting to hide anything, but we don't want it to look like this mass exodus to noobs when it is not the case. |

That is great to hear. Any support at all helps, I'm in a similar boat as well. Can only afford a title here and there. Maybe you should change the title of the thread to reflect your current status, maybe something along the lines of "Born-Again Blu". ![]() |

Picking a side is being a movie fan. The long term benefits of no war FAR exceed your short term benefit of being neutral. If HD-DVD wins, fine. Consumers will have (ultimately) chose for it to happen. But get the damn war over with. |

For the record, I started red and then went blu (thanks to some stellar titles from Sony and Disney). Did I lose my "consumer pioneer" status by choosing not to stay red only? I'm sure Fox, Disney, Sony, and Anchor Bay would have all preferred I stuck to senseless brand loyalty, eh? I think the only person sticking with one side would have hurt was....me. Some of us are huge fans of movies and not format wars. It's pretty hairy when a format fandom starts getting almost religious. Last edited by Nick Graham; 09-08-2007 at 07:03 PM. |

Being neutral makes you no more a movie fan than the rest of us. It is being greedy and will cause this format war to go on and on. If anything, you are hurting the progression of MOVIES to HD media. A MOVIE fan wants MOVIES to progress to HD. The only way that will happen is for one format to win. I'm pro blu, but if HD DVD wins, then so be it. I just want this over as soon as possible. Of course, with two formats comes a war. It's unfortunate, but true. Now, pick your side and fight till the end. Either way, one format is the only way HD media will survive. I apologize if I sound elitist and I certainly, by no means, intended to insult anyone. In an attempt to express my feelings clearly and concisely, I chose to use a better vocabulary than the usual vernacular I throw around the office. If that is how you read into my message, there is nothing more I can say. I certainly do lack the finesse, eloquence, and professionalism that the Insiders write with. As for your defection from Red to Blu, that is your choice and your choice alone. What I am happy about is not the fact that you went from Red to Blu, but the fact that you made an informed decision. In fact, you are making your voice heard even louder with your decisions. Unlike the American electoral system, you can continue to cast however many ballots you want. Unfortunately, some of us are constrained by financial circumstances. As movie fans, I would like to think that our tastes expand across a wide spectrum of genres that transcend studio affiliations. I honestly do not care who finances and publishes the film, what I am looking for is a solid movie that is presented closest to what the director and writer wanted to bring to us and appeals to me. I have no loyalties to any studios, only to the artistic vision brought to us. I'm sorry that you interpreted my wish to not see disruptive influences rather than well formed and thought-provoking arguments for old and new readers alike as format fandom. |

And EVERYONE has every right to be extremely angry at Paramount. The issue around Paramount is that they broke a contract with the consumer. When they agreed to support Blu-ray, they made a promise to us all. Breaking that promise for a bribe kills the trust the consumers have in any studio. And that such a FUD storm laying down changing arguments du jour occured, shows somebody is really worried that the anti-trust issues are going to rise up and bite them over all this. Early adopters are the life blood of any new format, and Paramount treated as all like garbage. And whoever set up the payment, clearly doesn't give a damn about our business either. You simply don't treat consumers that way. Gary |
