Default What TV should I get for around $1,000?

I have about $1000 to spend on a new TV. I can go a little higher if it's really worth it. I would like to get it at Best Buy because they are doing a promotion for 3 years no financing. I figure I could pay $50 bucks or so for awhile and it will pay it off. I don't know if this is where this belongs, but I didn't see a forum for general TV buying advice. I don't know if I should go DLP, LCD or Plasma for my situation.

I just got a PS3 and use it for Blu-Ray mostly. I will buy some video games (mostly sports like Madden and NCAA Football. I might get the new Metal Gear Solid) so I will use it for that as well.

I have a Toshiba 32" LCD TV (720p) currently, however, I would like to have a TV in my room. I am thinking I want to upgrade to 1080p, which really leaves me with the Westinghouse 42" model based on price. The Aquos is dropping in price, but it's pushing it when it comes to my budget.

I guess this leads to my other question. If I don't get a DLP then I am pretty much getting a 42" or smaller to fit my budget. Is a 1080p really going to be noticeable to my eye? I don't to waste money on a 1080p if it won't be noticeable on a TV of that size. CNET suggests that it doesn't matter on TVs under 50".

Any suggestions on TVs for me around $1000?

You could buy a Westinghouse. All you would have to do then is return it for a TV that is worth $1000. I know that Samsung has an excellent 32" LCD. Hitachi has a 42" 1080i Plasma out for under $1000.

Cnet also says that HD Dud is not a bad next gen player.

The new Westinghouse line looks pretty good. Many reviewers have said they are the best bang for the buck.

Thanks for the replies so far, I appreciate it. Keep the suggestions coming if you have any. I plan on getting it this Saturday. I am going to go into as many Best Buys around and see if any open box TVs are around that I could find for a couple hundred off.

Do you guys think LCD or Plasma is the way to go? I am thinking of the 50" Samsung 720p DLP that is $899 at BB right now.

I have a 61" Sammy DLP 1080p rear-projection. Absolutely love it. My parents bought the one your looking at. I was over there and it was very nice. Can't go wrong with Samsung IMO. They replaced Sony as my preferred brand.

Yeah, but he's looking to buy a tv for around $1000. Yours is more like $2000.

I have a Samsung DLP 50 inch what I paid around $1,200 for. You can check online to sites like Plasmabay.com. Or find the model number and put it in Pricegrabber.com to see what the cheapest prices are.

I am going to buy it at Best Buy because of the no financing for 3 years. I would rather pay it off slowly over 3 years then pay the money now.

I guess it comes down to this now. Is a Westinghouse 42" 1080p worth $200-300 more than a 50" Samsung 720p/1080i DLP? With the extra $300 I am saving I could put towards surround sound.

Is DLP good for gaming?

Yes, DLP is pretty darn good. I have a Mitsubishi DLP projector and I play PS2 on it all the time. I can only imagine how good the PS3 would look on it.
And I also have a couple of buddies who own regular DLP rear projection sets and they have the PS3, and all I can say is wow.
By the way, I believe the Samsung DLP's have a special game mode which optimizes the picture quality for gaming. Look into it.

^^^^^

Definately consider yourself a Projector mate if you've got a nice flat wall you could project onto. It's the best thing I've ever spent money on and it does'nt have to be stupidly expensive either. You could get a pretty decent set well within your price range.. you'll never regret it.

Yes yes, it has indeed come down in price. I have the Mitsubishi HC3000 which I bought for around $1600 with my employee discount when it was still selling for $2500 around a year and a half ago.
Best Buy now sells its latest version the HC1500 which basically has the same features and actually higher lumen output (1600 lumens) and a darker chassis for $950. You can get a screen for a couple of hunred dollars or less, no need to buy those super expensive fixed-frame screens that would run you $1000 to $2000.

I have a 106" Optoma GrayWolf II screen and I really feel like I'm at the movies. Actually, it's better than the movie theater for several reasons, none better than the quality of a good Blu-ray transfer.
