Stephen King's 'IT' heads to theaters
Dave Kajganich is adapting 1986 horror novel

By Borys Kit

March 12, 2009, 07:04 PM ET
Warner Bros. is bringing Stephen King's landmark horror novel "It" to the big screen in an adaptation being produced by Lin Pictures and Vertigo Entertainment.

Dave Kajganich has been hired pen the script, which follows a group of kids called the Losers Club that encounter a creature called It, which preys on children and whose favorite form is that of a sadistic clown called Pennywise. When the creature resurfaces, the kids are called upon to regroup again, this time as adults, even though they have no memory of the first battle.

The novel is set in 1958 and 1985, though the feature version will be set in the present day.

"It" was the best-selling book of 1986 and in 1990 was turned into an ABC miniseries that starred John Ritter, Harry Anderson, Tim Reid, Annette O'Toole and Richard Thomas. Tim Curry played Pennywise.

The screen rights have bounced around town since then, and at one time landing at the WB and again at Sci Fi.

Kajganich, repped by UTA and Madhouse Entertainment, has stealthily made a name for himself with his dark materials, writing "The Invasion" for Warners and snagging gigs such as the "Pet Semetary" remake among others. He was recently tapped to write New Line's "Escape From New York" remake and is adapting "True Story" for Plan B and Paramount Vantage. The latter is a mystery drama.

Greg Silverman and Niija Kuykendall are overseeing for Warners.

Not sure how they can beat the mini-series. Especially with a shorter running time.

Yeah..... the mini series had to cut so much out... I can't imagine a very coherent story line that could stay remotely true to the source in under three hours.

Hollywood has really crossed the line this time. Those films are classics as well. It's time for Hollywood to be sent to the "Psycho Ward"

A great book that sucks you in for all 1,140 pages. The t.v. mini-series was ok, but there's just waaaaay too much material in the book to ever get a truly great film adaptation. The strongest part of the mini-series were when the main characters were kids. Someone else topping Tim Curry's performance as Pennywise? Doubtful.

Anything short of a 16-hour mini-series could never do the book justice. Of course there are the more racier elements that no movie studio would ever attempt to put on-screen from the book. I bet this will be a very "loose" adaptation of the book. Hollywood has really become creatively bankrupt, mining the same ideas and stories over and over again.

My favourite S. King book. Sucked me in big time. From memory, think I read it from cover to cover in one (maybe two) sittings

This is possibly the best news ever!

I predict we will all hear complaints about how they don't have an orgy at the end of the movie like they do in the book. It will be the new squid argument.

Know Orgy Know Peace

I heard some rumbling about Richard Kelly wanting to do this a long tim ago. Highly doubt that he will be able to after the Southland Tales fiasco. Shame, that could have been neat.

Hopefully they can get Curry back for at least a cameo in a form of Pennywise. Be suhweet.

this is freeking ridiculous, I see a giant flop coming on. They need to leave this one alone, it is a classic and doesn't need to be redone.

I agree. This is my favorite tv movie ever but sometimes I'd just watch the first half and not bother with the second. I'm kind of indifferent towards this getting remade. I will always love the original, remember watching it on tv when I was 8. However, maybe a remake could be good. I read the book but that was probably 15 years ago so I don't remember what got changed. I would hope it would be R rated and at least 2 and a half hours. However, whoever plays Pennywise has a tough task, and I would love it if they had Tim Curry play him again.

IT was just plain bad. I agree that Tim Curry was pretty good, but the whole thing really stunk. All the Stephen King mini series seem to go from bad to worse, but I don't think anything can top the stinking mess that was The Langoliers. If they can do a good adaptation I am all for it. Pet Sematary does NOT need to be remade and neither does Escape from New York. I just wish they would get on with making Cell.

Same here. I'm generally totally against remakes but this'll be an exception. As long as they stay true to the overall feel of the movie then I'll be happy. Basically don't make it into some PG-13 teeny bopper MTV movie.

A straight up adaptation is out of the question. But that doesn't mean they can't make a decent movie based on the book. I remember at one point they were considering making a movie from the point of view of 1 of the characters, rather than covering them all in detail. That theoretically could work with a strong script. I'll reserve judgment on this one, though I'm a bit skeptical.

As far as Stephen Kings book to movie translations, ive always liked the choices of actors however the actors performances were pretty wooden i thought. nothing could beat the novel. I would love to see a Mini series adaptation of say The Talisman rather than a remake of IT.
How many people liked the remake of the shining would be a good example.

LOL..I'm re-reading this book right now and was wondering if there would ever be another film adaptation. I hope they get it right.

I liked certain aspects of The Shinning remake. I never cared for the original at all

IT would do better as a HBO mini-series.
