Default Noobish question

Okay, well I just realized I don't know something important. *Ahem*

Blu-Ray=/ 720?

...

I know Blu-ray can play in 720, but I hear people saying that companies only make movies in 1080(for Blu of course) so instead of 720 it comes out 480 on a normal hdtv. That kind of stinks. So I was thinking, should I get a 1080 50 inch or a 720 50 inch? The Blu-Ray players is in my PS3(lol) so what kinds of scaling problems will occur if I play Blu-ray movies on a 720 hdtv and ps3? what about games? I have become somewhat lost all of a sudden as I heard a complaint in the PS3 forum so it would be very nice if somebody could clarify what's what. Also if it's a 720 or a 1080 that might be better.

Thanks.

It can be play at 1080i or 1080p if you have 1080i with 720p set or 1080p hdtv you will view Blu-ray at 1080i or 1080p long as you set it to 1080p or 1080i on your playstation 3.

Blu-ray can be play at 720p, 1080i, and 1080p. It encoded at 1080p on every discs, highest resolutions possible that you will ever get to watch these High Definition movies.

There is some issue on games for PS3 that downconvert. I understand that there is some update that fix this problem. I better let somebody who have Playstation 3 to answer this kinda of question.

If you can afford 1080p 50 inch HDTV. Go ahead and get it. Most important is be sure that you have HDMI output for Blu-ray on Playstation 3.

You will have no issue on Blu-ray movies with your HDTV 720p tv that support 1080i or HDTV 1080p.

1080 with BD and PS3, DVD will be 480p, but if you get a good TV it will scale it well so you won't notice.

If you have a 720 tv you will view blu-ray, televison, and ps3 games at that and you will view regular dvds 480 until some new firm ware that might come out in march whic will let you upscale

I thought the PS3 only output 1080i for BD and a 720p TV has to scale, I am probably wrong as I don't have one,

My tv is 720p and 1080i. I watch High Definition at 1080i. So answer to your quesiton, you will watch Blu-ray movie at 1080i.

Regular movie, depend on what cable you use. It will go downconvert to 480p. I watch regular dvd through HD component and it automatic downconvert from 1080i to 480p for regular dvd. Please notice this is not Playstation 3 that I experience with, it was Xbox 360 with add-on.

I am not sure how HDMI will work with regular DVD on playstation 3 since HDMI for PS3 is almost like VGA for Xbox 360, so it should be upconvert the regular DVD.
I plan to get playstation 3 as my blu-ray player and internet to surf on my 40 inch sony hdtv.

Blu-ray will be at 1080i with your 720p long as your 720p have 1080i.

It will not be 480p if you watch Blu-ray movies.
You have to set it properly in Playstation 3 screen setup to 1080i and it will be 1080i, if set it to 1080p (only if your hdtv is 1080p) it will be 1080p.
