There's already been Blu Ray releases with PiP.

The question is how they implemented it.

Well, yes and no. There were movies with a second full encode of the movie with the appearance of PiP placed over it. Pretty cool work-around for the time if you ask me. Anyway, that announcement reads like this movie is going to have true PiP capabilities. And if that is so, it either means players will be available (ie PS3 with new firmware) or NewLine is simply putting out a future proof product.

The insiders on here have said many times that the discs should be authored in such a way that a player without PiP capabilities will handle the lack of hardware and not make the feature available. Conversely, if it detects capable hardware it will enable the feature as a selection.

I would HOPE that it would all be a bit cleverer than that. What I hope it will do is to only allow you to play one of the two video streams at once, but to choose which one is played, and to hear the audio alongside it, i.e. the only loss should be that you can't decode both video streams simultaneously, you can only play one or the other (like multiple angles on a normal dvd). There's no reason to totally block access to the content.

This is one of the comments on that page...

"I don't know why Josh didn't mention this in the news, since it seems significant:

Hairspray is actually released on Blu-ray exclusively in Q4. With the HD DVD version coming out in the first half of 2008 "due to the format's lack of regional coding". And this from the FIRST high-def title by New Line. It would almost seem like New Line has a format preference here... So does this mean that HD DVD will be forced to add regional coding before New Line agrees to release the movie on that format?

"The dual-format supporting studio also will release the musical on HD DVD, but not until the first half of 2008 due to the format's lack of regional coding, making the title a de facto Blu-ray exclusive in the fourth quarter." "

That seems worth noting...that's a 100 million dollar movie exclusive to BD right there for holiday 07.

..No, the question is, what darn PLAYERS will we see it on??

(Non-LG-combo ones, that is...Yes, we know you've heard of it, but there's no way in heck I'm spending an extra $500 just to watch HD die.)

I hope you are right. It's hard to be sure either way from the article.
