Default I'm ready ...

to get a new receiver .

I had been running a old Sony reveiver (like 1994 ,with 5.0 SURROUND) until it finally bit the dust a few weeks ago ! So it's time for a new one ! Originally (Pre Blu-Ray.com) I was going to get a HTIB ,just so I had some ok sound for the movies/games ! Well after lurkin around here for about a month or so I changed my mind . Gonna get the receiver and sub first ....then fill in the rest of the speakers I need .

Do I have this basicly right ***Onkyo 605 compares to Yamaha 663 ,and Onkyo 805 compares to the Yamaha 863 ?***I gave myself 500 for reviecer ! First off are these 4 the only one's in this range worth talking about . Secondly(my personal choice)is the 863 is that the best one of the 4 options ?

Thanks for any input !

50in Sammy DLP ,AND 40G PS3 !

No.... those four aren't the only ones worth Considering. Look int the Denon (3801 I think?), Marantz, and Pioneer.

All reputable.

What speakers will you be connecting to it? What is budgeted for them?

If you're sold on the 863, I'm sure you won't be disappointed with it....

... Right now I have the 2 Sony 12' towers that I got back with the receiver ,the center and surrounds right now are KLH Audio ,not very expensive but sound nice .

As for speakers no real budget right now kinda see/hear what I like and can afford at the time ...but if I had to put a number on say 500 .

Wow, twelve foot towers are huge!!!

If you only have around $1000 total budget, then i would suggest going for a slightly cheaper receiver and not skimping on the speakers.

Since you have a ps3 you don't need a reciever that decodes the HD audio, just that it accepts audio over hdmi. There is a sony that seems to the best price for this, but I can't remember which model.

for the Fronts? (L/R/C) or just the L/R, or for "everything" ? In either case, I'd say you're over-spending on the receiver, and under-spending on the speakers. I doubt you'll notice much of a difference in the 663 vs the 863 with the speakers you're going to find in that price range.

If I had a budget of anything under $3K or so for speakers, I wouldn't get a receiver that costs much more than $300 but that's me. I know many people have very modest speaker set-ups, and very nice AVRs, but I think you'll get the most return on your investment, by purchasing a more modest AVR, and putting the extra money into the speakers.

I would not recommend a HTIB, at any budget over $400 or so.

not necessarily.

I'd have the PS3 do the decoding, and save some money also. Not sure on the price of the new pioneer that's out there either....

I'd look at all AVRs that can accept the PCM from the PS3
