Default New from MS at AVS (5 BD Profiles)

More FUD.

It seems that MS is now claiming the there are 5 seperate BLu-ray profiles not including the audio only profile. When a user requested clarification form Talk, Amir butted in with the following:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...9#post11595729

"Before you put him on the spot , I think what Andy means is that you have 5 profiles because from content authoring point of view, now you need to accomodate every profile of the player with and without memory. In other words, in the field, you will have:

1. BD Profile 1.0 players
2. BD Profile 1.1 players with no memory
3. BD Profile 1.1. players with memory
4. BD Profile 2.0 players with no memory
5. BD profile 2.0 players with memory.

Just what they were thinking is beyond me...."

It never stops does it?

He also says when asked about Disney using 40mbps peaks in their movies and how Disney would fare if they started releasing on HDDVD:

"It is pretty easy . We encode their movies at lower rates and show them to be the same! Seriously, that is how we got them to adopt HDi. They showed us Java demos. We duplicated them with one tenth the code yet the output was identical and they were sold.

Indeed, I think we can make some of the look better even at lower rates with VC-1. Titles like POTC have obvious blocking artifacts which can be easily remedied in a re-encode."

Ive yet to see a single VC-1 movie that impressed me as much as AVC movies.

It must really suck to have to bring up such useless dribble to try and keep their hopes up about the future.
What really matters here is sales and support. Since they have neither they have to resort to smokes and mirrors.

Just how much alcohol does one have to consume before these blocking artifacts becomes obvious? But then again I only have a 60” LCOS set.

Challenge him to produce screenshots, and ask him the specific technical process he would use to achieve his "better" version that doesn't include softening and filtering.

Bet 10-1 he ignores it

I'm sure there is some slightly objectionable macroblocking, when you get over a 20 foot screen. I've seen it at 10ft wide, and I certainly didn't see anything I found objectionable. Only thing that looked better was Pirates on (I think 4K) DLP in the El Capitan.

That was the first thing to come to my mind. Just respond with "Prove It."

Anyway doesn't Toshiba have just as many profiles, only they aren't as public knowledge?

Toshiba player that locks up
Toshiba player that doesn't do 1080p
Toshiba player that doesn't do lossless audio
Toshiba player that takes 2 minutes to load a movie
Toshiba player that does it all, but costs as much if not more than an equally featured BD player

That'd be a great response. Don't forget to add the 360 that will only give 2 channels of lossless. Unfortunately, that was in his protected zone in the Insider's thread

Crap like that makes me want to put the A-man on ignore, with the rest of the HDDVD Nazi's. I thought for a moment, trash like that could be averted with the rule prohibiting and insider from talking about the other format.

Hi,

I can understand the fear the HD DVD faithful are experiencing. They have an army ready and willing to sit online and spread propaganda and slight Blu Ray to the extent that they can and give each other points based on how fanatical about it. (Tier 1, Tier 0 and so on.)

Funny thing is... I feel drawn to try to shed light on stuff in a almost similar way.

I'm nearly depressed about not being able to ignore the format war because in my view there is no format war. I made my choice back in November and everything in terms of hard sales figures and such should set me up to just be able to look away,.. keep buying the movies I want, and just assume it's over.

Still,.. I haven't perfected that yet.

Lucky for me I walked away from AVS after spending nearly 10 years there and racking up 5035 posts (some of which involved helping other I'm happy to say.) If I was there now I wouldn't be able to resist waging war on the propaganda and it would take too much of my time and energy. AVS has grown but it's still a drop in the bucket, there's plenty online and off building HT without it. I have to believe that anyone who looks at the facts isn't going to make the wrong choice about HDM.

Disney had a hand in developing HDi IIRC. that was a real kicker for them when disney went the other way.

Slacker. Lee Stewart was there for 7 months and has nearly caught up with you...

I guess that says enough about Lee.

Nope - because when your product (HD DVD) can't compete on it's own, you resort to mudding the waters about your competition....

Right, I will see if I can step in to the debate.

I know what the boss will say, but I will try anyway.
