Default Can any tell me why they didnt go with tdk 100gb discs?

Hi was wondering if anyone can tell me why the forum for blu-ray finally decided to go wiv the 50gb format and not 100gb discs that TDK had prototyped and got working or are we working with the policy that some companies here would look stupid?
I have been watching and waiting on blu-ray for a while now while i still prefer blu-ray over hd dvd to have a mere 5gb xtra over the other format seems a little bit strange that they did not try to push the design of technology to its limit to make something outstanding above the rest also there is great concern over costs of discs etc with all the forums i float around 45euros for a 50gb dual layer is quite high around 31 english pounds i only say this because i really do want blu-ray to be the chosen format but i have to say honestly as someone from the outside looking in they seem to be dragging there heels and the costs of discs seem to be very high i appreicate this is new technology and yes it costs but if they dont get the costs down very fast this will be betmax vhs all over again and yet techinaclly we all know that the betamax was better but if the money coming out of your pocket is too great i can see where this will go
I mean look like it from the normal consumer point of view you by a state of the art television has all whistles and bells says its hd ready you got choice of expensive blu-ray or says hd dvd if you already got one feature which one would you buy?
anyway back to my orginal reason i started this thread i was looking at the sony bwu-100 can anyone tell me why it is the are announcing there new pc with blu-ray in it for release in the summer and yet they still cant put a date up properaly for after market drives etc this is my point info very sketchy i dont need a new pc i have a very high custom built machine but if costs for this become to high i would have to seriously consider whether i would want to spend hundreds of pounds on something that could become obsolete in a year or two just on time scale and cost factors alone i realise that the main reason it has been held back was due to copy protection reasons and alot of film studios etc where not happy with what was on offer so it is being re-written to protect them fair enough but if they dont get there fingers out quick smart the fight will be done before it has begun you would only have to look at wembley football stadium london uk to see what i am getting at takes to long and costs go thru the roof no one will hang on for ever or spend too much i dont mean to sound like im having a go just trying to make some very vaild points and these are views i'm constantly hereing around places i frequent i had similar chats with in the region of about 70 ish people and they are all thinking the same thing as me so if anyone can answer the above and inform me of something they know i would be most greatful
Basil

The 50GB limitation only applies to the BD-ROM format (pre-recorded movies) which they needed to freeze, the other BD-R/BD-RE formats should support more layers in the future and 100GB discs could start appearing next year according to what I've read.

When it comes to HD-DVD I think 45GB HD-DVD media is pretty much DOA, at least for HD DVD-ROM. It's too complicated to make and I've heard very little about it recently. Also, I don't even think it is part of the HD-DVD spec yet.

Finally, to your question. I think the simple answer is that they don't know yet and don't want to commit to a date until things become clearer. I'm sure there will be more info within the coming months.

They currently have 200 gb discs.
ITs just they are gona wait to release them. In all honesty, its a money game.
If they gave you the 200 gig version right now, you would have no need to upgrade and buy another drive in the future. So what they do, is force you to keep buying drives if you want the larger size.

Sad but True.

Prototyping and actually putting into a full production run Blu-ray video discs of even dual layer capacity is apparently proving to be a challenge. This has nothing at all to do with the capabilities that may be present in PC drives or which we may even see as a capability of future players.

In a few years we may see players capable of reading video from 200GB discs which you record at home. But, commercial DVDs are limited to dual layer at the most to follow Blu-ray specifications. As well, all Blu-ray players from first generation to last generation must be capable of reading a dual layer Blu-ray disc.

well for me the obvious choice is hold off for the moment there is no way on gods green earth i'm going to spend 841 gbp for a pioneer blu ray pc drive that will be out of date say by january 2007 that just doesnt make sense to me. Also it will give them a chance to fight it out with HD get the prices down a bit for drives etc and discs need to be lower priced just to put this into context seagate has just recently brought out 750gb hdd for 310gbp(to get the same amount of storage id be looking at 1pc drive and 15discs you can work the costs out yourself too much) so hdd drives are getting alot bigger all the time so the one real benefit blu ray had for me massive storage is fast becoming a white elephant, its taking too long and is far too expensive. I mean who in there right mind is going to pay nearly 900 quid for pc drive yer right unless that is there plan all along but it doesnt make sense to me.
If costs dont come down sharpely within 6-12 months blu ray will be betamax all over again oh dear
