Default 100GB Blu-ray Discs??

I hear a lot of conversations about space. Most (all) of us want the best PQ possible. Some want the best AQ and multiple Audio choices. Some want tons of extras, and some want all extras in 1080p.

What is happening with the 100 gig discs I used to read about?

Can anyone shed some light?

The light is... search tool. Also check out wikipedia.

They are working on 100 and even 200 GB models. Yes they should play in existing BD players with a firmware upgrade.
No they are not out yet.
Most likely we will not see movies on them.
We might see games on them, but are more likely only for storage.
It will be a while before we see them as they are still in the development phase.

It's not just video that the 100gig can do. It'll probably mean larger games for the PS3 and beyond. I mean, doesn't MGS4 take up the full 50GB of disc space? Thats already about a year and a half into the PS3's life span. I think the 100GB disc will help other games go to their full potential.

but "Earth" from BBC is being released on two 25's rather than one 50, so there must be some restraints (costs) associated in the manufacturing process.

Yes, it's true there are more BD25 lines, so probably a little more flexible

The title was also likely originally planned on HD DVD, and 2 discs are better than one at the prices BBC charges

There are no plans to release films to 100 Gig models atm. The problem isn't just cost, cause it will cost more to make, but also compatibility. The LAST thing this industry needs is another format that won't run on all the players. Sure they say it will work with a firmware update... but not all BD players have that luxury, in fact not enough do right now.
Maybe someday they will work these into the format, but as we see it now, it is not as important to get out as people think. BD50 is very popular and the only thing that could benefit from BD100 is a series since movies easily fit onto a BD50. Series, and games.
It might be that the PS3 will use them for games, since all PS3s can have a firmware update. But right now that is not planned since it is still in development.
I sure hope to hear something more on it this year though, since I think it would be great to have 100Gb games and maybe even series and/or long epic movies (like LotR) but I am not going to hold my breath about it.

Yes, this is why I asked. It seemed to me that some people believed that PQ (on a 50 gig) was being sacrificed in order to fit multiple audio tracks and extra features. I guess what I was hearing was wrong. Also, I didnt realise that a 100g BD was a different format and not compatable with current players. Seems odd, but I am not tech saavy enough to understand.

Thanks for responses.

Well there are now 2 answers the the "50GB is not enough" issue.
1) second disc. If it gets so full it starts to affect the quality of the image/sound, put the extras on a second disc. It works for DVDs and no one seems to mind that.
2) BD-Live. With BD-Live, you can add subtitled, extra audio tracks, etc to be downloaded onto a hard drive and read from there. This way you only put the basics on the disc, and all alternate languages/subtitles/extras/commentaries/etc. would be something you download. This will prevent a disc from getting too full of stuff that it affect the image quality.

Glad I could help.

Increase of transfer speed would also be useful here. There are already PC Blu-Ray drives with 4X speeds, the drives existing players look like they're at most 2X or even 1.5X only, and they're not going to read any faster even if newer drives capable of 8x or 16x read speeds come out.

So other than PC applications, the BD100 and BD200 are not going to help movies much.

I also hope this will work with current players. They might say they do but I can imagine that it's a big change in technology and they'll come back to their initial promises, let's hope not

It's doubtful you'll ever get a chance to test it

No one made any promises other than Hitatchi

I heard back in 2004 at a Sony XDCAM presentation that 8-layer was part of the plan from the start. That's the 200GB. Though I am not sure if that's including consumer Blu Ray Disc, but the technology is the same.

Probably not movies as that would most likely be pointless, at most I would have thought BD 75 but for a series of TV shows, I would want them to use BD to put all of the episodes on one disc. I mean all 29 episodes of a friends series on one BD!! SO much better than having the crazy amount of DVDs you need to have all ten series

They could introduce an exchange program for those players. Trade in an obsolete player for $100 off a newer 100 GB BD compatible/upgradeable player. I think that would be a win win proposition.

Here's an article detailing some underlying improvements that could be made to Blu-ray:

Understand that these are all for commercial high-end industrial application, and not in any way shape or form for consumer use.
