Well after much debate and searching I went ahead and bought the HT-s3300 from onkyo. I have to say i am impressed with it. I was really nervous about buying a system without actually testing it, but new egg had a good deal on it. My living room is only about 8x15 and it fills the room completely and very acuratly. While watching Avatar truly feels like you are within the movie. Despite having a "passive"sub the thing rocks, actually had to turn it to negitave numbers so my wife would stop complaining

I bought the 3300 at release but the receiver was bad, which made for a less than pleasant experience. The system ended up replaced with a Pioneer vsx 820-k and a bunch of polk speakers.
The onkyo receiver, despite being a "step down" pricing wise has the pioneer dead to rights on user friendliness and features, while the Pioneer has a lot more wattage and a setup mic. If the onkyo had actually worked, I think that receiver is a better deal. I did notice that the center channel on the onkyo was noticeably on the weak side and the passive bass is so out of control loud (I now have a powered sub which is MUCH subtler) that I think now it must be wonky. Still for a speaker package you end up effectively paying $80 dollars for, I don't think too many stones can be thrown. |

Here's the situation: I can get DTS-MA by bitstreaming but I don't know how to get Dolby TrueHD. Can someone assist me?
I have a slim 120GB PS3 and the Onkyo HT-S3300. You can look at my gallery to check the specifications. |

Hi. I have been looking at this system, and have read as much info as I can find on this model, and have a question regarding the reciever decoding capabilities. On another forum,AVSforums I think, a poster there said that the Onkyo reciever is misleading and that it can NOT decode the True HD or DTS MA i think its called. For anyone who owns this unit, is this correct? Or is he just stirring up trouble? For what its worth, if I purchase this setup, I'll be using it with the $78 Magnavox NB500MG1F,and a 42" Magnavox 1080p Lcd tv. I apologize for being long winded on my first post, but I want to be sure of the units capabilities before I drop the money on this setup, and I figured if it has all the decoding capabilities it says it does, its a good price for it. Thanks in advance!

That went back too. I ended up with a refurb of a Marantz 5003, which I love but the receiver alone was $500, so I don't know if that is more than you want to spend. It was way more than I wanted to spend when I began, but once I started to get a feel for what is out there, the more it seemed like what is actually "good" is going to cost at least half the price of another tv. Also, a lot of that is that I want to be able to upgrade my speakers down the line without having to shell out for a new receiver in order to power them. One thing I will recommend, is watching Newegg and Amazon for Polk Monitor speaker bargains. I picked up my 5.1 speakers for somewhere around $350 all together, over the course of a few weeks, and there are cheaper alternatives to the speakers I bought.. Part of the problem with this site is that the people who really know what they are talking about have no time for HTIBs, and can't recommend them. Also getting recommendations that don't exceed your initial budget is really, really rare, especially if your budget is in the 3 to 4 hundred dollar range. The fact that I eventually ended up with an 850 dollar sound system is kind of hard for me to swallow, now that I've finally added in all up (for perhaps the first time). Anyway, good luck. I'll be curious to know what you end up with. Happy Hunting. |

Hello all,
I have the HT-S3300 and also the Onkyo HT-R510 from like 6 years ago with much bigger speakers. I think they may be as big as the HT-S530 speakers. I am wondering if I can use them with the S3300. Actually, I am using them right now, but I am wondering if it is safe to continue using them??? Am I underpowering them? Or how can I find out which speakers are compatible with my receiver? Is there a guide that someone can show me. I'm obviously a N00B. Thanks in advance! |

Just picked this guy up off of newegg and wow. I knew I was missing out by not having a sound system but I didn't know that it made that much of a difference. However I do have a question. When I play a newer movie with DTS HD-MA it displays this on the receiver's screen but with older movies like Cars for example which is LPCM it displays multi channel on the front of the receiver. Am I listening to the lossless track? According to the blu-ray player I am but I just want to be sure.

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Cars-Blu-ray/306/ anybody know which game or movie i can test to see if the surrounds are reversed? the box says it's manufactured april 2010. i only have ratchet and clank tools of destruction right now and there's too many sound effects going on at once. i emailed onkyo and they said my unit does not require an update at this time. i forgot to mention to the rep if it was affected with the reversed surrounds. don't know if all the reps are aware of the issue. should i talk to a different rep? here's the link if you have know idea what i'm talking about . http://www.onkyo.ca/press_releases.cfm?id=185 |

If you follow that link once you register the product you enter the serial number and it will tell you whether you need the update or not. I unfortunately do. Hopefully it doesn't take too long considering I just got the thing and unplugging everything and plugging it back in is going to suck.
