Default Report: Sony Selling Advanced Chip Stake

"Sony to Sell Advanced Chip Operations to Toshiba Next Year for $870 Million

The deal will likely include manufacturing lines for the Cell, the microprocessor Sony codeveloped with Toshiba and IBM Corp. for its PlayStation 3 game console, as well as image-processing chips for game consoles and camcorders, according to the report."

Doesn't this put Toshiba in a sticky situation? On one hand they'd want the PS3 to succeed but on the other hand the PS3 directly competes with their HD DVD players.

Oh wait, I forgot the PS3 is a "games console only"

Sony's semiconductor operation has been struggling for a while, bogged down with producing the Cell which requires expensive hardware.

This is not a surprising decision in the least, in fact many have expected Sony to make this move and source more Cell chips from IBM's East Fishkill plant.

You've probably heard there are factions within Toshiba that want to stop the bleeding and end the HD DVD debacle.

At this point many realize the only possible HD DVD victory would be phyrric.

Cha-ching...that's a lot of money for this chip. Is it really worth that much money?
