I spent about 20 minutes talking with a guy at Best Buy last night (I was there supporting Warner with a Troy purchase!).

I overheard his coversation with the store sales assistant. He wanted to upgrade his entire home theater system with Hi-Def components as he had just purchased a 42" 1080p Plasma. The inept employee couldn't answer his questions about Hi-Def formats and their players. He said he was looking at hi-def format DVD's and was considering either the PS3 or the LG dual-format player. That was my chance!

I spoke up about my own research into the format. I extolled the virtues of Blu-Ray and the things to look for when upgrading his equipment (TrueHD, DTS-HD decoding, HDMI 1.3, etc.). I suggested that if he still wanted to wait for stand-alone Blu-Ray players to come down in price, he should consider the PS3 in the mean time because it's one of the best players out there. Plus, he has a ton of PS1 & PS2 games at home. I also told him that I have the same setup and my PS3 has performed superbly as my Blu-Ray player. By this time, the employee had moved on to another customer. I also pointed him in the direction of the Onkyo TX-SR605/705 for his receiver upgrade (mine's coming tomorrow!!!).

Needless to say, this guy was very appreciative of my input. He left the store very excited and I have no doubt he'll be a happy Blu-Ray fan.

Word of mouth, my friends, will always be the best source of supporters for Blu-Ray!

Good job indeed. I find it somewhat annoying that most of these store associates don't know much about either format. I believe this may indeed hurt sales. I think they should start paying some of the people on this board to educate customers at the B&M stores.

Part of the problem is the industry has created its own FUD.

* Fear of choosing the wrong format.
* Uncertain of the future of high definition video.
* Doubt justifed by a lack of a unified format.

If they world had simply gone one or the other, HDV would be all the rage and people would be excited to adopt it. Others would wait still longer for the prices to drop. Instead, this has snow balled into one big slush ball.

Once the studios get their heads out of their HD-DVD butts, people will begin to come around. Others will still wait for HD-DVD to go away completely.

There is no way either format will get wide spread acceptance until there is one clear format. Take heed Paramount and Dreamworks. The world is increasingly blu. You can hurt a few hundred thousand HD-DVD adopters now, or a few million down the road. No amount of PR will ever buy back consumer confidence. You already shattered much of it.

I agree. If they (or the customer) don't know much about the formats, they seem bent on pointing them toward the dual-format player, which also happens to be the most expensive one. I'm sure HD-DVD would rather see that than a PS3 purchase.

I hope that salesman didn't make commission on that sale... stupidity shouldn't be rewarded.

About the article, it's very depressing that people purchase an HDTV and don't take advantage of it's capabilities.

Yup, we've got to keep talking it up. I was at Fry's recently, and a guy walked up to me because I had some BDs in my hand and asked me what the real story was because he was on the fence and just wasn't sure. I ran it down for him. Capacity, compression, bandwidth, codecs, studio & hardware support - the whole 9 yards. When I was done he said "OK, that does it - I've heard enough. Thank you so much!" Another was turned to the Blu side.

When you show people the differences in terms they can understand and let them decide for themselves, it's a good thing. It's all people really want. No coersion, no exaggerating the details, no embellishing of the facts. Simply show them and let them decide. People can tell when someone has done their homework. As a result, they feel better about their decision.

I wish I had someone to explain it to me early on. Could have saved me from some mistakes, not to mention a few bucks. Even if the guy I talked to decided to go HD-DVD, at least I helped him make an informed decision about the rest of his gear. That makes me feel good too.

This great Firing Squad article provides visual proof of the differences. See the comparison strips.

We're talking about Best Buy. There is no commission, but only $7/hour uninformed sales people. The only place you're likely to find commissioned sales people nowadays are high end electronics stores.
