Default So which BDs are actually better than HD DVD?

ok, we all know BD is the technically superior format mainly due to the larger disc capacity and higher bitrate. but what i want to know is which BD movies currently available actually run at a higher bitrate than HD-DVD is capable of?
i'm asking because i have a friend that is considering buying into HD-DVD rather than BD, his main reasoning is 'if both mediums have the same quality then i'll get the cheaper one'. he's not stupid and knows the pros and cons of both formats well, but doesn't think blu-rays higher bitrate is actually being utilized, making it only a theoretical advantage.
so what BD movie can i put on the PS3, turn on the info bars, and say "HD-DVD isn't capable of this quality, the bitrate is just too high."?
thanks in advance.

Well for one, any and everyone movie that runs uncompressed audio.
Check the list of them out at http://blu-raystats.com/.

Well the technical aspect is really moot. Blu-ray is better simply because it is not made from the souls of dead orphaned children like HD DVD.

Movies like Apocalypto, the Pirates movies, and other top picture-quality movies all use peak video bitrates upto 40mbps. They also include 5.1 PCM which is something HDDVD cant do. In terms of sound quality, Bluray has a huge advantage since the audio alone can have upto 8mbps and not affect the video (video could still be 40mbps)

Just look at the majority of Warner Brothers movies. They are mostly made to HDDVD spec and they dont match the quality of many other blurays, especially those from Disney and Sony.

Check out Casino Royale (from Sony), or Bridge to Terabithia (from Disney). Both use BD-50s, have high bitrates, and look incredible.

holy crap that's hilarious. I knew there was a reason I hated hd dvd so much. stupid orphans. and I heard in another thread that satan himself invented it.

but even some movies on both formats can show how bd is better. untouchables has peaks above 35 and even into 40.

Most Sony and just pretty much all Disney discs are better than any HD-DVD IMO at least.

take it like this

BD is better than HD-DVD Because it is so hard to do the same copy of Sony and Disney Titles on the standard specs HD-DUD have now.ITS impossible without compromising the PQ or SQ .

WHAT ABOUT FOX now they are back and we are expecting marvelous releases

Kingdom of Heaven is impossible to encoded on HD-DVD as it is now just an example of FOX titles released so far

Satan did invent it. He made the discs with the souls of dead orphaned children. Also I read some where that Hitler gave Satan the idea for HD DVD.

Ditto!

Another conversation you can have with your friend is one that I had with one of my friends. When he wasn't completely convinced (he was basing his decision on price too), I asked him to email me a list of his favorite movies. He sent me 6 titles - not ONE was currently an HD DVD exclusive. 1 was neutral and the other 5 were Blu exclusive. That's what convinced him to go Blu.

And just as an aside, he's a big fan of Asian cinema so 2 of the movies on his list were "Infernal Affairs" and "Oldboy." Content is why Blu will win, not price.

As a general rule, Disney BDs look MUCH better than Disney HD-DVDs

Oh,

Wait a moment...

There ARE no Disney HD-DVDs

Ok as you know I'm neutral so I actually did a test on Aeon Flux, Leathal Weapon 1 & 2 on both formats. I'd have to say they look the same on both formats but Blu Ray had the better sound on the 3 of them!! Some day I might try it on another disk I own on either. If I do try I will post back.
Mischa.

Dear Misha,

Lethal Weapon are warner brothers so obviously are the same ,They are doing copy and paste over BD.

Aeon Flux if i'm not wrong is Paramount Pictures and there doing the same till lately doing different codecs for Both Format.Where they were using a higher bit rate codec for BD and its clear in Shooter or the untouchables and many outside. But what i'm feeling dissapointed about that SONY help them too much to encode their titles and done it correctly on BD and suddenly they leave us looking for MONEY.

So your assumpsion is totally wrong.

No her assumption isn't wrong. Because it is her opinion. You may disagree but in her opinion they look the same, I am sure they do. Those movies are early releases on the next gen players and the PQ and AQ has improved since then.

I mean her assumption of these movies in overall with the subject of this thread.

Their board of directors is the reason they are such great FUD and spin masters.

Scorp brought up a good point - are there ANY dual release titles that feature a VC-1 encode on HDDVD and AVC on the BR copy? THAT could be interesting..........................

So have you actually seen the same movie on both formats? Those are the only one's I watched on both formats. Maybe once my queue is lower on New Releases I will put in Enter The Dragon, We Were Soldiers, Flags of our Fathers, Superman 1,2,&Returns. I can do a test on those as well. Or maybe I could rent Shooter HD DVD from Netflix and BD from blockbuster. I could try that one as well. As I said once I do I will tell all of you what happened. Until then I can only tell you on the one's I actually tested like that.
Mischa.
