A singer holes up at a sinister estate to write new songs for his act. The ghost of his murdered wife begins to haunt him, then the person who actually killed her shows up at the mansion. Director Pete Walker, Stars Jack Jones, Pamela Stephenson and David Doyle
![]() I have never seen this film but I just bought it and I plan to watch it one night this week. ![]() I came across this title while looking up more films that have Pamela Stephenson in them after watching Bloodbath at the House of Death, also any movie that stars the singer known best for the Theme song for "The Love Boat" can't be all bad! ![]() Last edited by jaws3dfan; 11-07-2022 at 06:00 PM. |

A great film, well it's entertaining anyway. These Walker horror films are so underrated in America for some reason, maybe they just never really played much on US soil which is a big shame.

I saw THE COMEBACK theatrically in Seattle, but don't recall if that occurred at a hardtop or a drive-in theater.

Yeah, I don't get it either. Frightmare, House of Mortal Sin and House of Whipcord in particular are really close to the top of the 70s horror I've seen, and Schizo isn't far behind. Yet it seems like people just never bring any of them up in comparison to lots of inferior American (or even British) productions from the time period.

In his (non-fiction) book Danse Macabre, Stephen King mentions The Comeback briefly (he didn't like it). I'll guess it played in Maine somewhere, though he could have seen it in New York City or Boston. |

The thing that stuck out the most to me with Frightmare, House of Mortal Sin, and (to a SLIGHTLY lesser degree) House of Whipcord is how incredibly the tension gets ratcheted up in the climax. I remember really being on the edge of my seat in all three of them, way more than I usually do with those kinds of movies. He was really good at suspense, and also making me care enough about the characters that I REALLY wanted them to escape the last act.

I discovered Pete Walker through 70's and 80's VHS tapes. Frightmare which was called Frightmare II on videotape since an 81 film originally called The Horror Star was calling itself Frightmare. Sheila Keith is amazing in this and other Walker films. Frightmare, The House of Whipcord, The House of Mortal Sin, Schizo and The Comeback are my favorite Walker films.

I think the first film I ever saw by Walker was Frightmare on VHS. Later I picked up Making Mischief: The Cult Films of Pete Walker book. It is a good read if you are interested in his films.
![]() I remember I was pretty excited to finally get The Comeback on blu-ray. It was hard to find in any format for a long time. |
