I am looking to get a second Blu-ray player and I currently have the PS3. I was wondering if I should get another PS3 because of the ease of updating and the multi-media capabilities or should I get a stand alone player? Any thoughts.

I would buy a standalone player, but I would wait for this one instead

Showing people blu-ray playing on your PS3 would not entice some of the older crowd to buy blu-ray. They are not gamers but may love movies. Seeing it play on a stand alone player instead of a game console could be more inviting. Sure, you can tell them about stand alone players, but people get mental. They tend to buy what their friends and family have. Do you really want two game systems? Remember, even a PS3 will be dated one day when they release the next big thing in development. Players have more of a timeless appeal. Especially when you can flash update them. Something DVD never had! |

PS3. Unless of course you don't think that the easy upgradability and multimedia capabilities and being able to stream stuff from your PC wirelessly are worth the extra $50 on top of the Sony BDP-S300.
Also I think being able to watch you tube videos with the internet browser on a 65'' TV is awesome. Plus you can fold@home I think thats worth $50 |

I own a PS3. I love it. If I were in your shoes though, I would get a standalone... the Samsung 1200 in specific.

I own a BDP-S1 and a PS3... I have to say the PS3 is better. The PQ is about the same, but the load times are WAY faster than the BDP-S1. Not to mention the interactivity works much better. Also, with the PS3, you actually know when you're decoding Dolby TrueHD. Where as on the BDP-S1, there's no display function that lets you know that it's decoding TrueHD, which would come in handy because if you switch audio tracks using the Audio key, you actually don't get the full TrueHD track, it just switches it back to Dolby Digital. Plus, like it's been stated here before, the PS3 is easily upgradable. The S300 that everyone is talking about doesn't have the features that the PS3 (or BDP-S1) have (incliuding the mentioned TrueHD decoding). But it's up to you. I personally prefer the look of the standalone with my theater equipment, but that wasn't enough to deter me away from using the PS3 as my main Blu-Ray machine.

Heck if the rumors are true about Sony and TGS about the $399.99 PS3 and they provide confirmation of DTS-MA support then just buy another PS3. |

I don't know if they still are, but as of 6 months ago cnet.com was using the PS3 as the hi-def test for most of the new hdtvs that they reviewed. Read the paragraph under the picture of the remote.

Alot of replies seem to miss the part about the original poster currently has a PS3 and is considering a second player.
PS3 is all I need but that upcoming Sony ES player is something I would pick up given a chance. (Then I would maybe move the PS3 out of the theater and into the living room proper.) -Brian |

Right now the reason against buying a stand-alone player is that none of them will suport the new Blu-Ray features (like Picture-in-picture and web connectivity) coming down the pike. If those features are not important to you, by all means, get a stand-alone player...
The advantage of a stand-alone player is that some have 5.1 and 7.1 analog audio outputs. If you have a receiver that does not have HDMI input but does support analog inputs, then maybe a stand-alone player is right for you. Otherwise I'd get another PS3. In my opinion it's the best and cheapest Blu-Ray player out there.... |

I personally plan on buying a PS3 and only using it to access 1.1-2.0 level features until such a time as an affordable Pioneer deck with all the features I want is available. For my personal uses, a game machine is for games no matter what its capabilities. That's why I have a CD player, a DVD player, a DVD player for region free and Divx etc etc. I believe in the "the more different functions you stuff in, the less well it does all of them" philosophy of design, and I like to limit my wear and tear as much as possible.
*sigh*, it's almost time to completely retire my Apex 600-A Right now I'm running a Panasonic BD10 |

I prefer a standalone over the PS3 for Home Theater. Reasons?
1. Heat output. 2. Noise output. 3. Easier and full integration with existing IR controllers and repeaters. 4. I can turn it on/off with ease. 5. Form factor fits my rack. That said it's very very hard to beat a PS3 for it's current BD player functions, upgrade potential, and media center capabilities. I have both until, like Wicky, the new models that are 1.1 (or better) and have all new audio streaming. |
