Default Ultra High HD screens from Sharp

http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/19/s...cd-with-16x-m/

Don't know if it's been posted yet, but damn that tv looks good! Even my wife wants on lol. I wonder how long it will take before this is affordable, and then maybe we will get the unaltered OT for Star Wars

Sharp shows off the world's first Super Hi-Vision 85-inch LCD with 16x more detail than 1080p.

While Japan's NHK has been working on the successor to HDTV, Super Hi-Vision, for years, there haven't been any direct-view HDTVs capable of showing its full 7,680 x 4,320 pixel resolution until this prototype unveiled today by Sharp. Its 103 pixels per inch may be just a fraction of those found in some of the pocket displays we've seen at SID this week, but that's still far more than the 36ppi of a 60-inch 1080p HDTV. If estimates are correct, we'll still be waiting until around 2020 for that 33MP video and 22.2 channel sound to actually be broadcast, although there's a possibility of some demonstrations happening during the 2012 Olympics. Skip past the break for the available specs and a video demonstration, or just head over to the NHK's Science & Technology Research Laboratories in Tokyo between the 26th and 29th of this month.
I wonder what the prices will be. Besides, it's still EIGHT YEARS away.

Sure 4k or what ever is badazz, but impractical for many years. They are saying 2020. By the time that sharp hits the street, I'd take a 21g flawless 4K+ Pioneer Super King Kuro in a size from 100"-150". I'm looking forward to OLED & I'm sure it will be able to have any resolution and satisfy all my HDTV needs. My Kuro's will take care of that in the mean time.

Those peoples comments were classic!
They thing standard HD broadcast is 1080p....and that's a big fat NO. Sure some on demand type pay to watch (direct tv I think) move stuff is claimed to be 1080p but it's compressed to hell. 720p/1080i Is what your gunna get 99% of the time from 99% of the HDTV sources out there & it's compressed to hell also. Plus we would need so material to even see this super high Res, which is next to nothing right now. Sure by the time you can by a display like that they will. It's kind of like 3D, at first there was not much now there is quite a bit.

Another thing is we would need a new physical format which would blow. Even by 2020 the vast majority won't have that kind of bandwidth/speed needed to handle the HUGE amount of data that would need to come through. One poster said it's only a 60Hz TV. I did not get that deep into it to find out, that would be very strange though! There are a bunch of other funny opinionated facts, but that's the 'Inter-webs' for you.

Not while trying to look at the whole screen at once.

I'd be more impressed with BD100's becoming the norm! Let these long movies BREATHE all they wish, on 1 disc!

Its kinda hard to judge the picture quality from a video or picture. I'd have to go see it for myself. Just because they're displaying the next generation model, it doesn't mean its gonna hit the sales floors in the near future. They're just trying to get people excited so rich folks will buy their stuff.

Sharp owns part of Pioneer and I wonder if Sharp and Pioneer collaborated or Sharp took some of Pioneer's technology for that?

Make sure you post that link on the LCD/LED section too since the Sharp is a LCD/LED.

When I did the elite board swap on my Pioneer 5020FD Non-Elite plasma display, the actual board had Sharp brand parts (two) on it. I don't know what the parts are called or what they do, but I'd like to know. So even the 9G Kuro Elite had sharp brand part here and there and that was in 2008!

I'd buy a plasma made by sharp with all pioneer kuro tech, if it was even uo The only thing bad about that is of course sharp is not in the plasma game, so the first few gens would suck and sharp would want as much of there own plasma tech as possible. I don't know, I just want to see top notch displays, whoever makes them .

Problem with that is allot of these studios don't even use the space they get now.

100% correct!
It would have really benefited upcoming releases like LOTR & Ben-Hur to name a few. As I mentioned, something to look forward to as the medium progresses.

If you go over to AVS or HDJ, a lot of people have some good things to say about it (mainly its a great bang for your buck set). Chad B wrote a great review on it also.
I'm actually waiting to hear about the Sharp X5 set that's coming out latter this year. It could actually be part of the Elite line that Sharp will be putting out. Here's a couple of quotes from Robert Zohn (Value Electronics) that definitely have me interested.
Quote:
Sharp has made two large investments in Pioneer and has recently negotiated the use of the "Elite" brand (not Kuro) for a newly designed very high-end full array back-lit LCD/LED HDTV that has a new video-processing and contrast enhancement circuits. Sharp is adopting Pioneer's "Elite" strategy of developing and building a TV with very strict tolerances and the best possible performance.

I've had great conversations with Pioneer and Sharp exec's and I am told it's quite an upgrade and all newly designed. It's those conversations that persuaded me to delay the shoot-out so we cna include this new technology.

I can't wait to see the new tech from sharp. It sounds promising, I would like them to Have a plasma line, but the full array local dimming LED-LCD sound like it's going to very nice with the new tech making it work.

I have seen Sharp consistently demonstrate over the years an uncanny capacity for clumsy implementation of video technology (yellow pixels anyone?). Their past and recent TVs have been difficult to incapable of full calibration to video industry standards. The marketing department tends to scuttle the engineering department. In other words, for a correct delivery of the original video signal, go elsewhere. Their displays may be pleasant enough for many folks to look at, just not accurate.

Resolution is primarily a function of viewing distance/screen size. It's also down on the list of most important picture quality characteristics that define a good video image. Sit far enough away and detail is lost. Sit too close and pixels structure becomes visible. Larger screen size has limitations in use, due to head motion and the resulting viewer fatigue.

They should concentrate on having an acceptable black level and picture quality on their tv's first, and then worry about resolution.
