Default The Brotherhood of Satan (1971) coming from Arrow

UK/US/CA title

Quote:
A small rural town and a family of outsiders, both trapped in the demonic grip of… The Brotherhood of Satan!

Recently widowed Ben, his glamourous girlfriend Nicky and his small daughter K.T. are on a road trip across the Southwest, which comes to a screeching halt when they witness an accident. Heading to the nearby isolated desert town of Hillsboro to report it to the Sheriff (played by L.Q. Jones), they are met with a hostile reaction from the locals, who are gripped by paranoia and fear due to a series of gruesome deaths, as well as the mysterious disappearance of eleven of the community’s children. As the bodies continue to pile up around them, Ben and his family find themselves joining the sheriff, a local priest and the town’s enigmatic physician Doc Duncan (Strother Martin, Cool Hand Luke) in the midst of a mystery that points towards a deadly satanic cult...

Produced by Alvy Moore and L.Q. Jones, a veteran character actor best known for his work with Sam Peckinpah, The Brotherhood of Satan is an atmospheric and chilling tale of terror that provides a crucial missing link between Rosemary’s Baby (1968) and The Devil’s Rain (1975) in the cycle of turn-of-the-seventies shockers involving sinister devil-worshipping cults lurking within the dark shadows of modern-day America.

Hmm. I already have this from that Psycho Circus cheapo 3 pack that I got for Torture Garden and Creeping Flesh. I never watched this one, just cause I didn't really think about it when buying the set. Is it actually any good? Quick look at IMDB suggests "not really."

I'd forgot I even owned it on that set. So it obviously didn't leave me with a lasting impression, so I'll pass on an upgrade...

I've watched it on that same triple feature and I was very unimpressed. It's miles below Creeping Flesh and Torture Garden in quality. Brotherhood of Satan is the type of movie that would be perfect for MST3K, can't imagine buying a solo release of it.

I'm in the exact same boat. I always heard it was a slog so I never bothered.

A friend and I saw BROTHERHOOD OF SATAN at a drive-in. When the dialog became corny ("This town's about ready to explode!"), we kind of laughed at it. Haven't seen it since the 70's, so I might revisit it.

I actually much prefer another Alvy Moore-produced shocker, THE WITCHMAKER (1969).

I don't think its a bad movie. The end was kind of cool as I recall. Having said that I have to wonder how this will sell as it has been available on Blu-ray of a while. The version on Psycho Circus looked decent as I recall. Hard pass on this release

Love the cover art on this! It reminds me of those cheap horror paperback novels from the 1970s.

It was also released on a double feature blu ray with Mr. Sardonicus. I have both releases (and saw the Psycho Circus blu in the bin at Dollar Tree a few months back).

Brotherhood of Satan is one of a slew of Satanic-themed movies made during that trend in the early to mid-seventies (Devil's Rain, Crowhaven Farm, Black Noon, Blood on Satan's claw etc).

As a fan of horror films, I'm happy to own it, but it's not worth the expense of an upgrade if you already have the current releases IMO. There is no way I would buy it a third time. I'm not sure what Arrow is thinking - there are so many other films that have yet to come to blu ray at all that deserve a release over this film, and I can't really see this as being a big blockbuster seller for them.

I got this in the Mill Creek Double Feature set with Mr. Sardonicus (the one I wanted) and this site's review sums it up nicely, though I enjoyed it a bit more than Martin Liebman.
The PQ is more than good for this movie on the Mill Creek, but the extras on the Arrow sound great and the original uncompressed mono could be much better than the Mill Creek. The Mill Creek had zero bonus content.

Yes, that ending was great and actually left me feeling a bit uneasy lol.

I didn't even realize I already had this via the Psycho Circus triple feature BD. Watched the film last night and enjoyed it but the presentation is perfectly adequate IMO. Arrow's not springing for a new scan and, frankly, it doesn't need it. I may grab a copy if it goes on sale but I don't really need to upgrade just for extras. I liked the film so having a standalone copy would the main reason to upgrade, personally.

Not a bad film to watch once, but its totally at home on that Psycho Circus three-pack I have, both in terms of price and shelf space.

It's being released in Australia in June by Imprint, with different extras.

Can't remember the last time I've seen such a collective yawn on a new release thread. Does make me wonder what kind of pitch was given at the production meeting . " OK guys any ideas for titles to release?" " I know how about Brotherhood Of Satan" never mind that its not well known and has had 2 prior releases. Makes you wonder

Must have been a hard sell on the movie title which sounds good but the film itself is a snoozefest.

I enjoyed it. It's important to note that Brotherhood of Satan was the best looking transfer on that collection. I honestly can't imagine it looking significantly better than that. The only reason I would see for an upgrade would be the extras.
