I was excited to learn that 2001 was playing at my local theatre, and then dissapointed when upon research I discovered that the DCP currently available is pretty much the same as the blu ray. It's not a bad transfer in many ways, but there are some problems. It's not as sharp as it could be on the shots of the models (not sure if this is true of the original footage), there is some noticeable compression, especially with space backgrounds, the film grain is not well defined as it's a 2k scan, some of the colour timing seems off and often colour is a little washed out, and quite noticeably the Dawn of Man sequence has weird marks all over it, very visible whenever the sky is in view (edit: apparently I've discovered this is just a part of the background projection screen when filming).
This is THE movie to get a 4k remaster, why is this not happening yet? Last edited by Coenskubrick; 08-04-2015 at 01:01 PM. |
