Default The Last Temptation of Christ ?

Does Criterion still own the rights to it?

Don't know, but I sure hope they do. Their DVD release was not only a beautiful transfer, but a very respectful release to an extremely controversial film.

I think it still is. I hope this makes it's way to Blu soon. It's my favorite Scorsese and one of my favorite films of all time.

Amen to that (no pun intended).

I always say that I get crucified when I say it's Scorsese's best. The pun actually wasn't intended the first time!

Haha, that's a good one. I loved the Kazantzakis book but always felt that the film didn't do it justice. If I never read the book maybe I'd enjoy the movie more. I just never warmed up to Defoe or Keitel in those roles, and Scorsese at the time was pretty messed up personally and professionally. I would much rather see Kundun or Mean Streets on BD.

I never read the book, but I did love the movie. Too bad there was so much going on when Scorsese was making the movie, so it's not really the film he envisioned before he started it. I do applaud him for making Jesus an actual human being instead of the revered 'son of God'.

I think Universal owns the rights to this title, but I imagine it wouldn't be hard for Criterion to release this on Blu-ray as I imagine Universal wouldn't want to take the heat for it.

Yeah, good film. Haven't seen it since it came out in the theaters in 1988. Love David Bowie in the film. Best Pilate ever.

Don't know.

But here's some good news on this title. Just recently it was added to netflix streaming in HD, and it you have high speed internet it's pretty good looking, and least based on the first few minutes which was all I had a chance to watch. I would like a blu-ray too, but in the mean time you might give this a try as a second place choice....

i came in here to make a thread about The Last Temptation, but found this one. i just watched it for the first time two days ago, and absolutely fell in love with it. While some parts were blasphemous (even for me, which is really saying something) I thought that the story itself was really different and made an impact on religious films. Regarding its release to blu ray, I'm trying not to keep my hopes up too much, as a film with this much heat will be too risky for a new release. Does blockbuster still refuse to put it on their shelves?

If it is too risky (which I doubt it will be, but anyway) I hope that Universal will do the right thing again, to let Criterion release it, again.

we will probally get a bare bones Universal release first and then the stacked Criterion release a year or so down the line.

Hopefully since Fear & Loathing is coming out soon we will get CC disc for Traffic and Spartacus. I hope Brazil & Dazed and Confused get CC Blu-ray's down the line also

Someone asked Criterion about Brazil, and they said that it probably would be released in 2011 or 2012. Since Universal will release the movie this year, it'll probably be next year for Criterion. And I really, really, really hope Criterion gets to release Spartacus, since they did a wonderful job with the DVD, and the movie deserves to get a high quality HD treatment.
