They make some good points here that I think are good discussion fodder, if nothing else.
I'm only going to copy and paste some of the comments made in the entire newsletter, for the sake of brevity, since a lot of it is either a given or has already been discussed here many times. Snippets from the Ultimate AV eNewsletter June 2006: Quote:
I think he may be right in some respects. That certainly doesn't make feel inspired to do cartwheels in the streets, to say the least. Thoughts? Last edited by JTK; 06-15-2006 at 06:25 PM. |

I think people are passing judgement like this has finished and it has not even really started.
People were rubishing DVD when it came out - and that wasn't too much of a failure...!?! Anyways, the HD disc thing will be long and slow. There is not as strong a need for it as DVD had even. So be ready for a long trail of negativity and doom reports... it is inevitable. Regardless of how successful things are. My attitude is that as long as I have a player and some discs, I don't care what other people think. It will only be doomed if the players all die and they don't make any more... My DVHS deck still works... ![]() |

You know the thing about writers is they have to write even thought they have nothing exciting to write about. Thus, we get articles like this.
Blu-Ray isn't even officially shipping yet and this guy is panning the whole HD format. DVD-Audio and SACD died because of of farily obvious reasons. 1. If people are complaining about the high price of CDs why would the industry to to develop a new MORE expensive playback device. 2. Stereo listening rules the roost. DVD-A and SACD beseeched me to buy 6 speakers and 6 analog cables to enjoy hirez music. No thanks. 3. Desire- consumers at large never complained about the quality of cds. And to be fair most aren't complaining about broadcast TV if they get a halfway decent picture. I see both formats ramping up slowly as people replace older sets with new HDTV sets. I don't see the formats going the way of hirez audio because hirez audio was just flat out stupid and it was evident from their product launch. I dance a littel jig when I think about their death just like when I think about the death of Divx. Stupids ideas should just die. HDVT isn't stupid. The price of HD discs at Amazon are $10 higher than a new release and this is at launch. The quality of the video is astounding and even if you don't have a bajillion speakers in your home you'll still enjoy a great picture on a HDTV. There's nothing similar to SACD/DVD-A and if these writers actually had a clue they'd realize it as well. |
