Today, the closest you get is with the older model PS3s, but they don't play DVD-A (for obvious reasons). At this time there is no other Blu-ray player on the market that also plays SACDs.

Keep your eyes out on Oppo though. Their upcoming Blu-ray player (BDP-83) is currently spec'ed to be SACD compatible. I don't know if it will be DVD-Audio capable though.

The Oppo is rumored to be DVD-A compatible.

Is it playing it in DVD-a or is it playing it in DVD? DVD-a is designed to play on DVD players when they can not read DVD-a.

in dvd. the advanced resolution is still only played on dvd a players like my pioneer universal players. but the ps3 still plays them. a lot of people think that it will just not work, as in the player wont recognize the disc at all.

I've been looking at this guy. It's HDMI, not sure if it's 1.3 though. Is 1.3 required to bitstream SACD/DVDA?

EDIT: Upon further research, the Oppo 980H looks pretty tasty. Only HDMI 1.2something, but apparently it can bitstream both DVD-A and DSD.

I own the Oppo 980. At a $160, it is a bargain. It upscales regular DVDs to 1080p and its CD playback is as good as some high-end CD players. To get SACD in its native DSD fromat, you need to set the video output to 720p, 1080i or 1080p. Apparently, when the video output is set to 480i/480p, there isn't enough bandwidth and you can't get multichannel DSD. I had this problem when I purchased mine and I thought my unit was faulty. However, after I called Oppo, they told me to increase the video output.

That's really odd. I would have guessed the opposite - that video resolution needed to decrease in order to bitstream multi-channel DSD due to bandwidth size.

Oppo makes great players that are definitely a bargain.

No advantage to DVD-Audio or SACD with HDMI 1.3 over HDMI 1.2

Pioneer ELITE DV-48 HDMI 1.2a is $99 - DSD over HDMI compatability.

+1

I have this player. Its very good. And I concur that HDMI 1.3 has no advantage for DVDa or SACD.

HDMI 1.2a is all that's needed for SACD bitstream. DVD-A is covered by HDMI 1.1 and up.

The only advantage I can find to the Oppo over the Pioneer Elite DV-48 is the PAL>NTSC conversion. But to be honest I haven't even checked to see if my DV-48 does that.

The Pioneer is $99 from Vanns.

I had the Oppo 980H, got it refurb'd for $139 from Oppo on eBay, but I returned it to them within 30 days because of the price of the Pioneer, the 2 year warranty versus the 1 year on the Oppo and the fact that native DSD output was the only thing I was looking for which both had...saved $40.

Yeah I thought it was weird too, given that uncompressed audio is a fraction of what uncompressed video is. Even uncompressed 480i uses more bandwidth than high resolution multi-channel audio.

It has more to do with the reserved percentage of the signal. So, the signal reserved for audio at 480i isn't enough for high rez multi-channel audio, the reserved audio bandwidth at 1080p is.
