Default E3 2005

Back at last years E3, Nintendo mentioned that the Wii (codenamed Revolution) would play DVD movies by means of a small internal attachment. Fastforward to this years E3 at the near final look of the Wii. I haven't read anything about this internal attachment.

I believe they meant external attachment, which, as far as I know, is still in the works. Although for under the price of the Wii you can get a much better region free DVD player that converts PAL to NTSC, so I don't see why you would want to use the Wii as your player.

Here's the thing though. Nintendo hasn't stated if the Wii console will play standard DVD, high defination DVD or blu-ray. I would hope a combination of all three. Using the Wii as a DVD player isn't a bad idea, but if I had to choose, I would choose using a standard DVD player because DVD discs are copy protected and the Wii might have a hard time playing certain movies. The ps2 can play DVD movies, but it does state in the booklet that certain movies may not be playable. I would think that the attachment for the Wii would plug in the back by means of a USB cord.

The Wii will only play standard DVDs. No HD or BD for it. It won't even output its games in HD, so there's no reason to have an HD or BD add-on. The purpose of the system is to have it be a money-saving device, and there's no way they could have added HD-DVD or BD and have it remain cheap.

I don't know if the Wii's function of being regular DVD's will even be used or not. Blu-ray is just around the corner, some of the movies for blu-ra are already out. I guess if you're one of the last to join the world of DVD and you don't want to get a regular player then the Wii would be for you, but for most of us that get a Wii won't even use it for a DVD player.

The only reason Nintendo is even offering DVD support is because both the PS2 and Xbox did last gen, and with both of them offering some kind of HD format support this gen, Nintendo would look hopelessly out of date if their console couldn't even play DVDs. But then again, using a console to play DVDs is only for people on a budget, anyway.

Wii doesn't really need to do that though to keep up to date there controller will be a revolution in itself as well as fully backwards compatible with roms.

The first time, I saw the controller, I was like "What"?, but then after reading about it, I realized that it was meant to be used as a virtual pointer. I also realized that certain games like Time Crisis and Madden football would be better to play on the Wii because of the controller being more acurate. I'm glad Nintendo did something new for a change.

That controller is sooo much fun to use. I can't wait to buy my Wii and play games like Time Crisis on it.
