did you format it using the PS3, or did you connect it to a PC to format it?

I have a WD (Western Digital My Book) 750 GB connected to my PS3 and didn't have to format anything.

External, not internal.

So I shouldn't use NTFS file system? I know FAT32 doesn't support files greater than 4 gigs, but I don't forsee me putting any single files that large.

I have so many things on my drive but there aren't many files that big so go with the FAT32 it's much easier to handle and works with everything

Thanks, I won't need a new HDD till I get a 2nd PS3, but wanted to know now so I know how to plan for buying a drive. But if I can figure out my problem, I won't even need the external drive.

I keep getting a media server DLNA protocol error 4405. I don't know what is causing it, and I have looked all over and can't find out what is causing it or how to fix it.

Thanks, but I think adding an external drive would be the best solution. I will be able to copy files from a usb flash drive to the external hard drive using the PS3 right?

You have to use FAT32 for the PS3 to recognize it.

Yep. The WD 750 My Book that I bought was already FAT32. No formatting required. Just plugged it in and went to town.
