Just a 5400 RPM laptop drive. The PS3 will format it once installed.

I think he was asking about an eternal HD not replacing the internal.

Just make sure to format it for FAT32 and create a similar folder structure as on the internal drive otherwise you will have to have the PS3 search for files.

The 4 folders are:
Picture
Music
Video
Game

Done!

when you plug a drive into your computer it will get you to format it to either NTFS or FAT32.. choose fat32

be aware though that fat32 has a file limit size (4gigs i think)

so if thats going to be an issue you might want to consider getting a 500gb laptop harddrive

If you format the drive in Windows the format binary limits the size to ~30 GB.

Use a freeware tool, like Swissknife, to do so, and you can format the entire drive as FAT32.

I have a 500gig Western Digital external Book something or other and it works, but is slower then the PS3 normally works. I'm going to try the above mentioned folder structure right now and see if it helps.

Your 60 GB HDD that came with it? Have you split any space off for a Linux partition? It starts out at 55 GB actually, and then goes down from there. In addition to the stuff you mentioned, any downloaded updates to games you play will eat away at your free space.

I just connect through a wireless router thats in my living room. I know certain games you have to wait for it to download something before you play it for the first time. Like GTA4. I think it took 2 or 3 gigs.
