Default Am I insane? Purchased BD software before the hardware...

long time reader, first post here...

Last night I made an odd choice, to buy Spiderman 3 and 300 on Blu-Ray, although I do not yet own a player.

I'm a huge fan of Blu-Ray, and of HD media in general, but I've yet to take the plunge into buying an HD setup. Once the HD players hit shelves a few years ago, I boycotted DVD buying (felt like it would be like buying cassette tapes while CD's were on the shelves).

Software is king now, and studio support will be swayed by the numbers. I felt that buying a few movies is a small investment for a huge pay off in the end.

thankblu for your time. -J

While I wouldn't do that myself I can understand why someone might. Why buy movies on a format that you know will die? (ie. DVD and to a lesser extent HD-DVD) You really owe it to yourself to get a hi def home theatre setup tho, it's too fantastic to wait on.

Good job! do you plan to buy a stand alone player or PS3? The $400 PS3 is out now and Best buy has the 80GB PS3 for $500, i think thats a deal.

Glad to know I wasn't the only one. I actually bought 300 after watching it at a friends house on blu. Since I had already seen the movie and I knew we where going to buy a blu player I went and got the movie 2 months before we bought our first blu player.

Of course we now own two blu players so I guess we are blu and true.

I agree, if price is of concern, you can't go wrong with the PS3 for now. You will be very pleased with your decision once you've seen HD in your home. Oh, and do you have an HDTV yet?

[edit]: never mind, after posting I saw that you had already answered the question. Good luck, I think we can all agree you will be very happy with your decision!

Put me in the insane list too.

Back when I was waiting for a store to get in a PS3 I could buy, I bought a couple movies early too.

Nothing wrong with picking up the movies before the actual player. I think its better than buying a player with no content to play with it. This way, when you get your player you can immediately start the party. Just don't wait too long or you will get a case of blu-balls.

I had more than 10 CDs before I got my first player (just listened to them on my brothers Hifi). With DVD and now with Blu-ray I jumped right in.

If you go for a PS3, get the 60 GB if you can find it. It will save you money and you can upgrade the internal HDD yourself to a bigger drive for less. It is completely valid and voids nothing so go for it! Any internal 2.5" HDD will work (laptop standard)

There are are few from Hitachi that are non-standard physical height. I don't think they will fit in the PS3 or most laptops. They are 12mm high instead of 9mm or so..

I did that back in the day when DVD was first coming out...I owned The Matrix before I had a player. I also owned Blu-ray movies before I got my PS3, I paid 599 for a 60GB model so the prices out now are nice!

I wouldn't call the 12mm high drives non-standard, just too big for the PS3 (and probably most laptops these days). In fact, the 12mm drives were around before the 9mm ones.
