Default Article: HDTV-Gaming-Lag: An Epidemic Exposed

Article from IGN: HDTV-Gaming-Lag: An Epidemic Exposed

Quote:
Over the course of the months that our HDTV Q&A series has been running we've been deluged with comments regarding HDTV-gaming-lag. From questions as to which models are most susceptible to sad stories of new purchases leading to great disappointment, we know it's a serious issue for gamers planning to make the jump to HDTV, or those who got stuck with an HDTV that is making games unplayable. In this feature we aim to identify and explain what HDTV-gaming-lag is, what causes it, and various ways to overcome the problem.
I haven't got time to finish off reading yet, but it does seem like an important issue if you want to play games (old or new) properly on HDTVs.

It all depends on the age of your set and what kind it is, I already play PS2 games on an LCD and there's no lag at all, everythings smooth.

To be honest, all older flat panels may struggle with any HD content fed to it, as those sets weren't designed with HD in mind. They were just flat alternatives to regular sets, or that allowed you to run PC content through.

Is this gaming lag visible with the naked eye?

I mean if I go to a store to buy an HDTV, and test a tv with a gaming console in the store, on which details should I pay attention too? How do I see how a tv has gaming lag or not?

Thanks

The lag they referred to is the delay between input and output of tv signal.
eg A signal is input, 1 second later the picture is shown on the tv.

For games you need to act upon what is happening on screen. A slight delay in response will result in loss of precision, that might render some games practically unplayable.

As for testing I believe it is quite easy, just run a fighting game like Street Fighter or Tekken and play some games on it, see if the screen respond to your controls smoothly enough.

Have you ever played online shooters game, where the conection is not that great? You see an enemy and starts shooting at them, one second later you are dead and your enemy moved on, and you couldn't do anything about it.

For this problem you could go for a better connection, whereas for tv's the problem will be there to stay. That's why it is a concern for gamers.

Well in that case I have no lag issues, so I shouldn't have any problems with a PS3.

I have a 26" Toshiba LCD that's 18+ months old and I can't say I've noticed any lag when playing on my XBOX, GC or 360.
