Default Gods and Generals--Thank you HD DUD

Okay, I was reading the High-Def Digest boards this morning and came across their latest review of Blu-ray and HD DUD with Gods and Generals. I have the movie here and have already watched it. I really do like documentaries and I was upset with what they were having to say about the movie, etc.

The Blu-ray review stated that unlike the HD DUD version that the supplements were placed on the same disc as the movie, so I was curious as to what the HD DUD review had to say. I think this quote tells me why film quality wasn't as good as it could have been and why the extras were in 480i/p:

From Kenneth S. Brown review:

Quote:
I believe this is a first. Although it's not officially an HD DVD/DVD combo release, this HD DVD edition of 'Gods and Generals' makes use of the same technology, putting the majority of the disc's supplements on a standard-def flipside of the disc, presumably to give the three-plus hour feature all the breathing room it needs on the 30GB HD DVD side of the disc.
Okay, I have one thing to say, thank you HD DUD for limited capacity.

So...blu-ray needs one side to do a 1080p film plus extras. HD DVD needs two sides to do 1080p film and 480i extras?

If that is not a ringing endorsement for HD DVD I don't know what is.

And on top of the 1080p, the film was 3 hours long.

Again, I am still wondering if the maximum capacity of the HD DUD version is the reason why we have softness in Gods and Generals and some of the other issues they are talking about on there.

However, I was shocked that a Hi-Def Digest actually put something on there that made reference to HD DUDs capacity-deficient issues.

I can't imagine the pain of watching 3 hours of HD DVD. I would rather stand on a belt-sander.

Actually, its almost 4 hours of utter boredom. I remember contemplating leaving at the intermission when i saw it in theaters.

The Blu-ray edition of 'Gods and Generals retains all of the 480i/p supplemental content that appeared on the standard DVD. Unlike the two-sided HD DVD, the Blu-ray extras are presented on the same side as the feature film on a 50GB dual layer disc.
no 1080p extras... still bites though.

Agreed. But I understand Warner not wanting to put extra work into HD DUD to display a message that says, "TURN DISC OVER FOR REST OF FILM". Just not cost efficient for Warner who puts same version on both discs.

I wonder if that's why Troy looks so mediocre? No, I don't really wonder actually.
