You know? Of all the features BD has, you don't hear about it that much imo. But I really love it.
When I bought dvds, I used to hate whenever I got scratches on em'...even light ones that would not affect the playing of the flick. But with the special coating on BDs its like literally impossible to unintentionally scratch em' up. ![]() |

Yes, it's a polymer coating less than a tenth of a millimeter thick. "Durabis" is the trade name given by TDK for its version of the coating, but other manufacturers, such as Panasonic and Sony also make their own hardcoat.
And yes, it's very tough! ![]() |

That's true for the most part, but don't kid yourself into thinking they are indestructible. My used copy of The Wrestler had a few marks and skipped, hung and froze several times. I cleaned it and tried again. Same thing. Good I bought it at BBV, so they replaced it for another.

I lately noticed plenty of tiny scratches on brand new blu-ray discs. Bonnie and Clyde was so horribly scratched when I held it into the light that I was wondering how that movie could still play without a frame skip. Notice that I take extremely good care of my discs, yet some of them show tiny scratches when being held into the light.

Biggest reason I got rid of netflix was because I kept getting BD's that wouldnt play due to scratches. Real pain in the arse. So I just canceled since they raised their prices as well.
Oh well I might rejoin here soon. Hopefully it has gotten better.. Never had one DVD skip from them but 4 blu's then just gave up. Sad part not one of my HD DVD's icluding combo's every had a problem. Now I just buy all my Blu's Last edited by Grif32; 08-15-2009 at 10:42 PM. |

Only problem I've ever had with Netflix blu is with Starship Troopers not loading up at all from 2 separate rentals.
I'm counting on that scratch protection when I eventually receive my Battllestar Galactica Complete Series set. |

I only order my bds from amazon.com and that kinda shocked me lately. Out of 5 movies from last month, 2 had scratches on them which couldn't be whiped away. They play fine however but I was still wondering how something like this could happen to sealed blu-ray discs.

That's my favorite Blu Ray feature. I put my DVD's in those portable carrying cases, and they will scratch in the case, whether I play them or not. I have NO space, I live in a college dorm room, and with Blu Ray, there are no scratches, yet. It's also a huge bonus if you buy those movies that get pulled from the shelves, and you can never find them again, except for an exorbitant amount on eBay. They're supposed to hold up better over time, versus a DVD.

If you have issues with neflix Blu's it is most likely a very very fine hair line crack on the outter edge of the disc created by the post office machines.
of all the movies I have rented my counts are something like this: BLU wont play Hair Line cracked: 4 BLU wont play from scraches: 0 DVD Totally cracked from center hub to outer edge: 15 DVD's that won't play from scraches: 30+ So at least the BLU's are tougher than the DVDs as well.. they only get a slight small crack instead of cracking the entire disc in half.. but the small crack is still just as effective at destroying the disc. |

This is good information. So the problem seems to be hair-line cracks from the centre hub. Doesn't this tell us that they should rethink about the case design and the centre hub protection?

No no.. never cracks on the center hub on blu.. it is on the outer edge that has the small crack. I never saw a hub crack on a blu ray.. I mentioned normal DVD's have full cracks from center hub to outer edge..

Okay. Not sure how that can be fixed easily. This type of information is valuable and should be fed to the designers to think about for improvement.

Is there any solution that can be used to 'wipe out' or 'fill in' the very, very fine scratches you sometimes get from normal use, yet have no effect on playback.
PS, you can really see the difference the Blu-ray coating makes when you compare a Blu-ray compared to the DVD digital copy of the same movie, which has been stored and treated the same way. |
