Default The ideal TV for hd-dvd

I couldn't help LOL at this report:

"Toshiba 42HL167
Toshiba's 42HL167 is inexpensive for a 42-inch LCD TV, but it's just not a great set.

Toshiba's LCD scored so poorly in our picture-quality jury tests that we gave it a second chance. That time it did worse.

How bad? When the camera plunges underwater in Mission: Impossible III, one corner of the screen became a big, black blotch. Shimmering sunlight on a train turned into a moire-like pattern. Mexican-American comedian George Lopez looked much too pale.

Nor does this model add much to the basic TV-watching experience. It comes sans picture-in-picture, headphone jack, and USB port. On the other hand, it can control a Toshiba HD DVD player, and it has timers for shutting off the TV and limiting game-playing time.

The 42HL167 is no treat to set up and use. The HDMI and coaxial inputs face down and are difficult to reach; the only easy-access inputs on the side are for composite and audio. Changing sources via the remote's Input button involves scrolling through all of the TV's inputs--even those that have nothing plugged into them. True, you can change inputs by pressing the remote's mode buttons (DVD, TV, or the like), but these also change which device the remote controls--so you can press the DVD button to make the TV display the DVD signal, but not without also telling the remote that you now want to control the DVD player, not the TV.

If things get too confusing, you can turn to the manual, which is well laid out and comprehensive. Unfortunately, because there's no PDF version of the manual online, you can't use Adobe Reader's search function to find a topic that isn't noted in the printed version's index.

The 42HL167 is one of five TVs we reviewed for our November 2007 issue's HDTV roundup that support HDMI 1.3, which holds out the promise of one day displaying far more colors than content currently makes available. But considering how it handles the colors that it has now, I can't get too enthusiastic about that."

Wow, if this is indicative of anything it could explain a lot in how Toshiba runs business. Name brand recognition, 3rd world rate products. Like Radio Shack, only more sucessfull.

Someone told me this of the restaurant business and I have to agree. If they specialize in one kind of food (as most fast food places) and if that food isn't very good, it tells you something about the establishment in general, and not to eat there.

I have been watching Kitchen Nightmares with Gorden Ramsey, and this one place had a lot of flies in the dining area for some reason. It looked clean enough. The kitchen and food storage was a NIGHTMARE of cockroaches and rat droppings. I then surmised, any place could have a couple of flies that come in the door, but if the place is swarming then get out!

Now apply these principles to how businesses are run and it could open your eyes.

But the point is that Sharp, Sony and Samsung also have high end LCD lines so buying a Toshiba is not from lack of choice.

If you are already committed to spending a large sum of money, saving money should be way down the list below picture quality, usability and features.

don't dog toshiba entirely. they have a very strong semiconductor unit which is very profitable to them. dont' forget they did co-develop the brains of the PS3 with sony and IBM. their CE equipment leaves some to be desired, but that's a different unit. i, for one, will never buy a toshiba product. when (yes, when... just like sony folded and released VHS, so will they) toshiba rolls out BD players, they will sit dusty like their HDDUD predecessors

My dlp was higher rated than any other and I looked at sxrd's and the samsungs, also so I just saying lets not hate based on the format war alone. All CE companies should be dogged when they release crap as well as praised when they release a nice product.

Oh, I am not dogging them. They did have 150 million to piss away on Paramount, they must be doing SOMETHING right.

One of the most grievous mistake a combatant can make is to underestimate your enemy. Toshiba is a very powerful and resourceful company with a lot of capable engineers.

If the idea is to defeat them over the long run, be aware of their actual capabilities and counter where they are successful as opposed to dwelling on their missteps.

I'm just an innocent bystander though. This is not my fight.
