Wink 40gb or 80gb ps3 help

Im going to be getting a ps3 at the end of this month and am wondering what one to go with. If I get the 40gb I'll be getting the ps2 as well, but I dont mind the price its just a pain to have 2 systems. There a not a lot of ps2 games I play but there are some ps1 games I play such as Final Fantasy 7 at least every other year since its came out. This is the one game that will not work on the ps3 80gb that has me on the fence about it. Do they release patches for old games so they will work or is it just that you get what you get? If this is something that can be fixed I may wait for a patch but it seems like this would have been one of the first games to be patched. My other concern with the 40gb ps3 is that Sony is having a different company make it. Im just wondering if it will be the same quality of the others. Any thoughts on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

do you care about thr graphic and compatibility of ps2 games? if you do, get PS2 and PS3 separately, but if you don't, get the 80GB PS3 (but still, if possible, get 60GB PS3).

Thanks for repling. I work at Best Buy and just checked our inventory system and we have 15 60gb ps3 in stock and Best Buy offers a 30 day price grantee. Is the reason you suggested the 60gb ps3 because is suppose to drop to 350? I’ve come to grips with having to buy a ps2 and price is not an issue, I just want to make sure I get the most current hardware in the system and if it means the 80gb system I can go that route or I can wait till the 28th for the 40gb.

NO. Don't get 80GB at any cost when you have option of 60GB. To be honest I don't even know the price in USA. I suggest 60GB because it has better backward compatibility (which the hardware to achieve this, is removed from newer models). If you get that 60GB, you're very unlikely needs PS2, as the compatibility is pretty good.
40GB is even worse. They don't have any backward compatibility AT ALL. So, 60GB is better. 80GB, no. It's just bigger harddisk, but what you don't realise is that there is an important hardware that is removed.

Get the 60 - then you don't need to purchase the PS2. (And you can always upgrade the hard-drive yourself if you feel 60 gigs won't be enough.)

I got a 60 gig - and if I had to purchase one today - I'd still purchase a 60 gig. Better backwards compatibility with PS2 games. I already had a PS2 - I wanted to get it out of my AV unit and just have one unit.

With the PS3 - I have a PS3/PS2 console, Blu-ray player, DVD player and CD player.

At first, I started downloaded my CD onto the hard-drive and it started taking up lots of room. I've deleted most of them now though, since I simply stream my music from my computer. Now I have plenty of room on my hard-drive.

That's my 2 cents.

does sony relese updates for old games so more will work? Actually the one game that concerns me is finaly fantasy 7 and on the search part of the ps3 site for backwards compatability that is the one game I own that wont work on both the 60 and the 80.

Another question I have is with the exception of b/c will the 80 or 40 have a better blu-ray player in it?

Thanks so much for the help so far. I really dont care about price I just want the best system for blu-ray movies. I had the 60 and it broke so I got the s300. its fine but slow and the 2.60 update is kind of screwey on mine.

I would definitely get the 60GB PS3, it is the most complete PS3 system Sony has created.

60GB PS3 has better PS1/PS2 compatibility than the 80GB because it has the emotion engine bulit in (the 80GB doesn't have one). It's also better than the 40GB since it doesn't play any PS2 games only PS1 games. The 60GB & 80GB both have a memory card reader & 4 USB ports. Besides this difference there is nothing more, so if your on a budget just get the one that fits you.

IMO the 40Gb PS3 is the best choice if you only want to watch Blu-ray´s (and play PS3 games)

Kind of what Im looking for. I only care about blu-ray quality and I will play some ps3 games and upconvert my DVDs. I think and its just me guessing, not actual proof, that the latest one would have the better blu-ray player in them. Again, dont care about b/c. Thanks much.

it's the same. they just removed the chip for backward compatibility and changed the HDD to 80GB.

That list of backward compatibility AFAIK does not apply to 60GB. Kingdom Hearts is listed not working in EU backward c, but works perfectly in 60GB (though it's japanese version). I have FFVII International and it works perfectly.

I bought the 60g model. Even though I don't play PS2 stuff, I wanted to make sure I had the best model for it if I did.

The HD size isn't an issue at all. I'm not putting movies on it and if I needed space, upgrading to a larger HD is a snap.

Oh, and I bought MotorStorm for $30 new off Ebay.

if you can afford it, get the 60 gig. if you cant, get the 80 gig. Dont go near the 40 gig...
the best one is obviously the 60 man, its worth the extra cash. it even has 2 extra USB ports as far as i know.

I have the 60 gig... typing this message on it right now with a blue-tooth keyboard. Its an amazing little (Well... maybe not too little, but whatever ) machine. Go buy one. Now!

Get the 60gb for better PS2 compatiblity. If that isn't an issue then get the 40gb if it doesn't have much less components than the 60gb. For $100 extra you can probably get a 160gb notebook drive and have yourself a 160gb PS3!

I'm not sure what you mean when you say that Final Fantasy 7 won't work on the 80GB PS3. According to the PS3 compatibility status it says:

"On Disc 1, when the first battle begins at the Mako Reactor, a flashing black square appears around the user’s character's pointer."

The 60GB also has the same text. Sounds like it works to me.

I dont know what you guys are smoking but my 80g ps3 plays all my ps2 games same as a 60 gig does. Its the new lower cost 40 gig that lost the backwards compatibility. The 80 gig is the very same system as the 60 gig except the larger hd unless I have a magical 80 ps3........................
