Default Till | Whoopi Goldberg & Danielle Deadwyler

Quote:

Whoopi Goldberg and Danielle Deadwyler will star in Chinonye Chukwu’s upcoming film “Till,” about Mamie Till-Mobley’s fight for justice for her 14-year-old son, Emmett Louis Till.

Deadwyler will portray Mamie Till-Mobley, while Goldberg is set to play Till’s grandmother, Alma Carthan. Goldberg will also serve as a producer on the project, for MGM’s Orion Pictures, alongside Keith Beauchamp, Barbara Broccoli, Thomas K. Levine, Michael JP Reilly and Frederick Zollo.

“We have waited a very long time to bring this historically necessary important film to people,” Goldberg said. “And as we watch the repression of American History when it comes to people of color it makes it even that more important. I couldn’t be with better people: Fred, Barbara, Chinonye, Keith, Michael and Danielle.”

“Till” chronicles Mamie’s decision to have an open casket at Emmett’s funeral and to allow Jet magazine publish David Jackson’s funeral photos, in order to ensure people everywhere saw the true horrors of her son’s murder. The decision from the grieving mother was a galvanizing moment that led to the creation of the civil rights movement.

Principal photography on “Till” is set to begin in September in Atlanta.•

I saw this TV spot a gazillion times over the weekend. They were playing it nonstop.

The director states that "there will be no physical violence against Black people on screen" in the film. "We're going to begin and end in a place of joy."

I realize she's a bit polarizing since her later career of co-hosting an opinion talk show, but it's pretty undeniable she's basically entertainment royalty when it comes to film and stage. Thought she was entertaining as oscars host as well, but I tune out when it comes to those daytime talk shows.

People that attended an early screening are saying Danielle Deadwyler gives the performance of the year.

I saw Till yesterday. It was profoundly moving. They handled certain aspects of the story which I won't spoil, with dignity. I highly recommend seeing Till if you are interested in this type of subject matter. It's not for the faint of heart though. Very emotionally alarming.

PG-13 was the wrong rating for this. This movie needed to be about the horror of the incident; not the hope it inspired. Otherwise, the audience will just leave satisfied and content.

The director has literally said it an interview she had no interest in depicting that kind of on-screen violence against black people and for the film to be traumatic. It’s grim material as is, and I felt well balanced against just going so dark that you lose an audience (whereas this version got an A+ Cinemascore, showing people love it).

I'm not saying you need to be gratuitous about it. I'm just saying that it defeats the original point of the story. She made the decision to have it be open casket so that everyone can see what happened. It's supposed to make you feel traumatized. The most effective stories are. And Cinemascore means nothing. I don't want a movie dealing with a shameful past to have the same acceptance as an Avengers movie.

Sure they also wanted kids and or teens to see this and learn about it. Not sure they would go to see anything like this. None the less still for those who are.

It's like what Kubrick said about, Schindler's List...

"Think that's about the Holocaust? That was about success, wasn't it? The Holocaust is about 6 million people who get killed. Schindler's List is about 600 who don't."

Huh, I've always attributed that quote to Terry Gilliam.
