Default why do people just buy the ps2 and the ps3?

I mean, the new ps3 is $100 cheaper, so you can buy the $100 ps2 when it comes out for your ps2 needs. It equates to the same thing except for 20 (40 later) gigs less. And like what most people say, almost everyone has a ps2 already so who cares about the lack of ps2 compatibility in the new ps3.

not to rain on your parade, but if you spend 400.00 on a ps3 and then 100.00 on a ps2, then why not just buy an 80g or find someone who still has a 60g for 500.00?

My thoughts exactly. So why is there any form of criticism on the new ps3. Is it just something for the xbox360 fanboys to harp about? They don't have a really good backwards compatibility with the xbox to start with. (I kind of mislead it ith the title.)

If you count in the price of a separate SACD player, suddenly the 40GB version isn't anywhere near as cheap as the 60GB and 80GB versions.

if they made the new ps3 smaller I could see it selling well. I thought the reason for its size was to accommodate the ps2 hardware. I don't mind the size of the 20,60,&80gb ps3. but a smaller 40gb w/o the ps2 hardware would be a nice seller, especially for those of us who only use it for bds.

There are a couple of reasons why simply buying a PS2 to make up for the lack of BC in the low end PS3 is not a great option. One, PS2 doesn't upscale. Two, that is adding another device to the entertainment center, and many people already have so many devices that they would be reluctant to continue adding things. Three, what if you are already running low on audio inputs on your audio system? PS2 would take up a precious input. Four, PS2 doesn't have natively wireless controllers. I don't like having cables strewn all across my living room floor, and the wireless controllers for Xbox 360 and PS3 pretty much eliminate that problem.
