Arrow Opinion: BLU-RAY Holiday Strategy

Hello fellow Blu-Rayers,

I want to know what you think BR has to do this holiday season to successfully stomp out the RED competition for good? I think they need to lower the price of the cheapest player, more TV advertisements, and definately some cinema advertisements. That could quickly boost sales and brand recognition.

I think BLU could win this. i mean, c'mon we have FOX, DISNEY, and more!!

what do you guys think?
what do we need in place this holiday season

They should have a "recycle your old HD-DVD's day". They should go from mall to mall, set up a booth and exchange Blu-Ray coupons in exchange for HD-DVDs.

Remember those Disco Sucks rallies in the 70s? How about the public detonation of a stack of HD-DVDs?

How about lower cost players? Lower prices do equal higher adoption rates.

Default you are on to something....

or maybe do those Coke vs Pepsi challenges they have at the malls and supermarkets.

its hard to find a good side by side comparison at best buy these days.

my prediction is a massive marketing campaign, including a specific one regarding the blu-ray capabilities that Playstation 3 has. PS3 gets cut to 399, other players are 350. thats all its going to need.

Here's an easy one...

Get Warner to go exclusive and Paramount to announce the FIRST Spielberg title release (according to their arrangement with HDDVD, he can still release on whatever he wants).

Those two things happen and BR would be a LONG WAY to ending this kind of a discussion.

The Coke v. Pepsi challenge was useless. The sales numbers for Coke were not heavily affect by more people choosing Pepsi in a blind taste-test, and Coke retained higher sales numbers. However, Coke trying to reformulate as "New Coke" was a flop as the "New Coke" tried to make itself taste a little sweeter (like Pepsi). People don't always say exactly what they want, or even choose what they say they want. You can read a lot more about this and other interesting marketing tidbits in Malcolm Gladwell's Blink.

Yeah, my Best Buy has two Blu-Ray displays on 40" screens, and one HD-DVD display, all alone (almost in the darkest corner of the store), but it's on a 50" screen.

The first Spielberg will be Close Encounters on BD on Nov. 13.

What they should do and what they will do are two different things, i'm use to them doing the least amout to try to win. So i'm not expecting blu to do as much as red, the're more reactive than proactive.

G'day all,

They are already using cinema advertising here in Australia. Our Blu-ray campaign has really stepped up. Sony is advertising Blu-ray everywhere now.

Default slash and burn

sony should cut their player prices to a bare minimum in the month before the holiday season, keeping the ps3 prices the same. reasoning: people with standalones are more likely to pick up movies, as stocking stuffers and shit.

the loss they take on missing profits from the standalones will be made up by the revenue the comsumers with standalones generate. build up a good, strong consumer base and how could they lose??

i know, easier said than done. im skeptical a little too, but think it would work.

----i wish i could buy everyone blu rays for christmas but only few have players!!! think about it

I keep going back to 40% of PS3 owners not knowing it's a Blu-Ray player. Pack a 10% off a Blu-Ray coupon in every game. Or if you want to get real gimmicky, put a free BR coupon in every thousandth game. I mean if 3/4 of PS3 owners bought one movie a month, that would go a long way towards ending things.

G'day BluCrusader,

They say what you'd expect. That it's the future of movies and gaming in full HD. The ads look pretty awesome particularly the cinema ad I've seen. I wish I knew where to find it on the internet for you. They also show the ads on T.V. There is a "making of" the ad and a few T.V. spots about Blu-ray on Foxtel (one of our pay T.V. providers here in Australia). Very informative.
