Default Will 40Gb PS3 be $349 in the US?

Sony just announced its pricing for the 40Gb model in Japan (in white!) at 39,980 yen.

That's about $340 dollars.

Now the rumor has been that the 40Gb PS3 will sell for $400... but the announcement has been for 400 _euros_ in Europe. And European pricing has always been way higher than US pricing.

As far as I can tell, up to this point, Japanese PS3 pricing has been largely similar to US PS3 pricing.

So does that mean the US 40Gb PS3 could actually see a sale price of $349 or even less?

If it was so, I think both 360 and HD DVD camps will piss in their pants. And justly so.

Actually, no US prices have been announced. I think $349 is possible.

that would be good. $399 for PS3 sounds good, but $350 for PS3 sounds great.

we sooo need to catch up to X360 this holiday season....we have the power, we just need to lower the pricing and get more qualtiy games.

There was some oddities in the news article I read on Bloomberg, says that the 40GB model won't play PS/PS2 games which I thought was bullocks since the PSN Store sells PS game downloads.

Is it lousy reporting or is that true?

It's true. It will play PS1 since that is a pure software emulation. Their PS2 emulation requires the GPU, but they have emulated the emotion engine.

My understanding is the new sku will play PS1 titles through software like it always has. However the PS2 emulation will not be possible on the new sku. Someone mentioned (guessed) it was because they removed a part from the new sku that is required to emulate PS2 games (without the emotion engine).

I guess I'm confused because what's the point of calling it software emulation if in fact you still need certain PS2 hardware to play it. The 80 gig model has the software emulation (without the PS2 emotion engine) so I can't understand what exactly the new sku is missing that is making it impossible to emulate PS2 games.

It's also possible that Sony could leave it up to the retailer to drop the price below. This would probably make the most sense, because the retailers in each region are more attune to if product is moving and what is required to move it.

$349 would be insane and I would love Sony for it.

The costs for the hardware they just took out were removed from the Insider's thread - can you tell us what they're estimated to be saving in hardware from the GPU in the 80GB to the 40GB?

I've heard rumour it's $299???
but i think that makes sense, since what normally priced for GBP299, will be priced $299 as well.

this thread should be moved to Playstation area.

If they released a $349 40G PS3 in CERAMIC WHITE, I will be getting one for the bedroom . It will match my widdle Wii. Hell, if the release a black Wii, that'll go in the living room and the white one will go in the bedroom!

I have to figure it'll be $400 as the standard price of the 40G; but if you use the Sony Card rebate, it could work out to $300.
