Default Once Blu-ray has defeated Toshiba's HD DVD, should Toshiba be held accountable?

for starting this format war because of their greed? Wanting to continue to horde the massive profits of licensing revenue by cornering the next generation video disc market?

I think so. It seems to me that most CE/Movie studios wanted to make this multi-company front and advance the technology together but because of Toshiba's greed it splintered an otherwise unified front and thus hurt everyone from the software makers and hardware manufactures right down to the consumers of the products.

Perhaps they are those that support them (companies) should pay stiff fines and/or not be allowed to "play" until reasonable restitution can be accumulated.

Business is business. Besides, should we hold Sony accountable for losing the Beta / VHS war of the 1980's?

Let it go.

agreed, this is all business and people need to stop taking it personally.

when you have THAT much invested where the line between business and personal begins to blur youve gone too far, imo.

I believe in the BD product, im at teh mercy of the corperations....if HD DVD wins out, i will adopt that format, simple as that, im a realist in the end and simply want a progressive technology even if its only a step forward instead of a leap like BD.

No, but I do think that some of HD's biggest fan boys (they know who they are) should have their nipples hot waxed by Rosie O'Donnell.

They aren't nazi's dude. It's not like they are hunting down blu-ray fan-boys and putting them in camps or anything. This isn't Nuremberg.

If this were Nuremberg the war would be over and the HD DVD-ites on trial.

I don't think there would be any remedy in the law for that. They probably followed the letter of the law and hit as hard as they could. ( but I don't really know about the legalities of it.)

I'll just be glad enough when Blu wins, that I won't care about the rest. Let Toshiba slink off into a dark corner and lick its wounds while we all watch great films on a great system

when HD-DVD loses, Toshiba will ache because Sony, Philips, and Panasonic (not Toshiba) will make money off the HD Market with BD, and the HD-DVDites will suffer as to pour salt in thier wounds by us having bragging rights over them.

and of course the Irony, the HD-DVD fan who want HD-DVD because it was cheaper have to go and buy a new BD player or a combo player to thus spending more money :P

Lesson: Don't come into the HD market if you can't spend the money.

Fixed it for ya. Here's a fact: Panasonic has even more BD patents than Sony.

I would believe that. Most Blu-rays I've seen to the very end of credits has "mastered by Panasonic" or a similar saying.

As for Toshiba, I'm sure they'll probably just make a blu-ray player once they admittedly failed. The real losers in this will be the people who bought into hddvd. Toshiba will just shrug it off.

That's the sad part of the situation.

However, Toshiba is already being punished...they are losing money on the HD DUD players as it is by having to make them so cheaply priced to keep up with BD. And at the end, when BD wins, they will be punished by having to pay into the BDA. Although it appears that it is a drop in the bucket, because they did pay PM/DW $150M without batting much of an eye.

you've got a point, I think that Consumer today spend money b4 they know what it is they are buying, B4 I bought the PS3 and started cheering on Blu-ray, I researched it, I knew this was the better technology (I love technology) if the format fails well I'll know II supported the best not just the cheapest, if it wins I'll be glad to know I supported the best, and it won.

I think we've all read sotires or have had personaly expieriance with people who have mis-information reguarding HD-DVD/Blu-ray causing them to Support HD-DVD, if you jump into new technology blindly you just may miss out, thanks for correcting me, Musashi.

IMO, when a person accepts a paycheck from a company the moral thing to do is to try to help that company. Greedy and immoral would be taking the paycheck and not trying to help. I have a problem with certain deceptions and things that cross the line, but employees at companies (or anybody getting paid by them) should be trying to help them and coming up with products to try to compete and bring in revenue and profit is part of that.

Basically, this is one of the big problems I have with the "greed" accusation that is thrown around against these companies. What do people think the moral thing for employees to do is when they are accepting money with the expectation that in return they will try to help the company get a return on that?

Because Sony, Panasonic et all aren't just as greedy .

These companies are in business to make money. That's the bottom line.
In the end this is all just about an optical disc format, I'd be surprised if I buy one of these discs 15 years henceforth.

Don't get too tied up in the whole format war thing, unless of course it's a sort of sport for you?!
Wayyy more important things going on out there.

Yea betamax lost when it was used commercially in broadcasting for 20 years up until hd broadcasts (wait and sony still produces most hd broadcasts). Obviously beta was a failure when it was the commercial standard for 20 years oh and laser disc was a failure since it was around for 15 years (and was the first to feature pcm audio), get your facts straight.

well, just move on if it's possible.....
but if i am HD DVD owner, I won't be a happy man, and I certainly plans to sue both tosh and ms.
I wouldn't sue BD, because I know it's superior format and it's going to stay due to ps3 base fans.
