Default Warning: Samsung won't play DL Discs!

With news that the Samsung won't play 50GB DL, I think its wise not to buy this at this time or if your in the 30 window please return it unless your a "Gambling " man. I really love the player and despite the reviews it does do a good job. Into The Blue,RV and Silent hill look excellent. BUT... No DL is blow. Who knows if it can be fixed with firmware or not. We need to hear from Samsung about this pronto!

have a link about that?

what i just read is that it's most likely fiaxable with a firmware update. remember, the sammy was released before they had DL discs to test. so the technology is prob ready to go, they just need to modify the firmware prob to make it work. hold your horses on this doom and gloom.

I think Bill Hunts blog got misinterprated.

It says as of now current Players and pre production units can't play existing DL BD's...doesn't say they can't ever or always won't. It's within the BD spec to play Dual Layer discs, and they will test BD50's to ensure playback on all players before releasing im sure. Theres no BD50's DL movies out, so how does anyone know this anyways? psffttt...whateva meng!

Brian is somewhat right. All the players being made have to have the ability to play BD50 as defined by the Blu-ray spec. However, the current discs that aren't getting failed by the manufacturing plant cannot meet that spec, thus they cannot play on the players.

So, in essence, the problem remains that until the BDA can figure out how to get BD50 to meet their specs and still play correctly, we will not see one BD50 title.

BD 50 is goning to be availible by november. Japan already have movies ready to pre order on Blu-Ray. Guess what they only have Samsung Player too. So BD50's must work on the Samsung player.

Early adopters get scred over big time. 2 years from now $300 dollar Blu-Ray players will look better, have less problems, and bigger, better encoded library will be out too.

It's way too early to start passing judgement. Blu-Ray nor HD-DVD will be able to replace DVD anytime soon. 2008 when everything goes HD. People will notice that cable TV looks better than DVD, and finally make the switch over to HD home video.

HD-DVD can only win if PS3 is a complete failure, and Sony and their supporter fail to bring Blu-Ray players to under $200 dollar range before HD-DVD players supporters do, then Blu-Ray will suffer the same fate as Beta-Max.

I still with Blu-Ray as it has better scalability that HD-DVD which I beleive is prety much maxed out already.

Cable Tv doesn't have to be high definition by 2009, just digital. During this time there will be millions of people who go out and buy new HDTVs and also will pick up a BD/HD-DVD player. This when I really begin to see DVD placed on the back burner.

Cable television NEVER *HAS* to be digital. The FCC rule is for over the air broadcasts not cable or satellite. I have never heard of a rule (or even a "proposed rule making" which is how the FCC floats 'trial balloons' on what rulies it might make in the near future) by the FCC that requires all cable TV to be digital by any given date.

However, with 99.99% of the people who have heard about the over the air switchover requirement by February 2009 thinking that this means a requirement for not only HDTV but also all cable and satellite to switch over to digital and HDTV too, I -- expect -- we will see 90+% of the imagery to be at HDTV by that time. Only time will tell.

Cable TV going to digital is also more bandwidth efficient for them. This is just one more reason (out of many) for the cable guys to switch to a 100% digital system. And as I've mentioned elsewhere in these forums there are local government strongly pushing for the cable TV providers to not kill analog signals for many years to come.

Cable will be analog until verizon rolls out its fiber optic cable tv service and then cable will be forced to upgrade as well. Satellite is already in the process of switching over, and by satellite i mean direcTV
