Quote:
New York City, 1980s. A struggling, deadbeat musician named Julius has fallen on hard times. With no guitar, band or paying gigs, he cooks up a get-rich-quick scheme – to find the legendary, yet elusive guitar-maker Elmore Silk. Considered one of the greatest luthiers in the business, Silk’s disappearance from the scene has only made his work more coveted by musicians and executives looking to make a buck off his name. Julius agrees to track the man down and sets out on the road. Meant to be a simple journey upstate, Julius stumbles down a long, winding road full of dead-ends and wrong turns towards an eventual revelatory conclusion in the Canadian wilderness. One of the great cult classics of the 1980s and starring character actors Kevin J O’Conner and Harris Yulin, the supporting cast features real-life music legends Tom Waits, Leon Redbone, Joe Strummer, Dr. John, David Johansen and more. “A wry, laid-back Heart of Darkness" (Chicago Reader), Candy Mountain combines the keen eye of legendary photographer Robert Frank with novelist/screenwriter Rudy Wurlitzer’s mythic American prose to produce the quintessential road movie.

Directed by: Robert Frank, Rudy Wurlitzer
Starring: Kevin J. O'Connor, Harris Yulin, Tom Waits, Bulle Ogier, Joe Strummer, Arto Lindsay, David Johansen, David Margulies, Leon Redbone
1987 / 91 min / 1.66:1 / English DTS-HD MA 1.0

Additional info:
  • Region A Blu-ray
  • Director Alex Cox on Candy Mountain
  • The Road Goes on Forever video talk by author David N. Meyer
  • 16 page booklet with new essay by author John Dixon
  • English subtitles

They spelled Harris Yulin wrong on the slip.

Here's hoping the misspelled slip will become a collector's item

Just ordered the slipcover version. I've never ordered from VS before, but I'm hoping to give this to my father as a Christmas gift. Any chance that I receive it in time?

If you're not a VS subscriber, it may not arrive before Christmas. Just a guess on my part.

I ordered over a month ago, but not a VS subscriber, so sti waiting. They filmed this where I'm from, but I didn't know til 20 years later after I moved away and discovered it. Did you get your copy? Did your dad like it?

When it didn't ship after nearly a month, I ended up cancelling my order with VS and ordering from OrbitDVD last week. I received it 4 days later in perfect condition with the limited slipcover. It was also almost $10 cheaper for me.

Unfortunately, since I wanted to keep it a surprise, my dad ended up renting it on Prime before I could get it to him. He said he loved the film though and he's happy to have a copy to watch again.

I probably won't be ordering directly from VS again unless they can get their shipping times to a more reasonable level.

Mine finally arrived from VS this week, took almost 7 weeks. The encode on the disc didn't exactly blow me away, but it looked perfectly fine in motion and honestly I am just so happy to have this film in HD quality - the version I've had for years literally is a VHS rip, so this is a monumental leap.

Not to mention a former professor of mine is featured in the special features, on the video talk The Road Goes On Forever, which was a nice treat (and quite good too!). I know this film doesn't get much (any?) love at all, but for me it is an underrated gem and a quintessential road movie.

I went to OrbitDVD after reading your post, then went to check my VS order to possibly cancel it - VS shipped Jan 15th should be here tomorrow.

What is your dad's connection to the movie?

It was filmed where I'm from, but I didn't know about it til years after I moved away. It's a bit of a time capsule for me as not much changes in rural Cape Breton. Wild to think a handful of fairly mainstream actors actually came go that corner of the world - I know most filmed in NY but Harris Yulin, Kevin J O'Connor, Bulle Ogier and a few others did trek out to Cape Breton Island for their scenes.

The locals thought Bulle Ogier was the lead actress from the TV show MASH. Some still think that's who she was.

No connection beyond it being a personal favorite of his that he wasn't able to properly revisit since the VHS days.

Oh, gotcha. I see it's now on YouTube for rent too. I wonder how he discovered the film, as it likely didn't get a wide release back then. Amazing the things that stick with us over the years.
