Default Box Office Showdown 6/15-6/17: Rock of Ages vs. That's My Boy (vs. Madagascar 3)

Two major releases this week, the 80's hair band musical against Adam Sandler doing that one annoying voice he does.... again.
Who will take the top spot this week? Rock of Ages? That's My Boy? Will Madagascar 3 dominate for one more week before Pixar's Brave pillages its family audience? Or will Piranha 3DD stage an epic comeback after grossing $314,000 in two weeks to post a staggering $50 million in its third weekend?!

Rock of Ages should get it, I'd hate life if Adam Sandler gets the top spot after being knocked down by his last few movies. That film looks vile and despicable, why would anyone want to watch that

While I think Thats My Boy looks dreadful, it might be helped by the fact that its a harder R movie. Rock of Ages will probably beat it, but I think Madagascar takes the top spot for one more week. Kids + summer vacation = boatloads of cash, and for one more week its the only kids flick out there.
But I wont try to guess numbers until later in the week.

I think Mad3. I don't think Musicals make that much the first week.

I agree with this. I just don't think either of those movies look like they can take the weekend over Madagascar.

Can't wait to see Rock of Ages. Should be a guilty pleasure. I'll pick up the soundtrack, too, if I liked the movie enough. The '80s rock!!!

i've never seen the musical or heard the original soundtrack, but the latest trailer for this got me hooked. I loved the music.
...BUT... I recently listened to the full movie soundtrack, and I'm uncertain. It wasn't great. Some of the versions of the songs aren't very good. I still hope it's fun, but I'm not sure.

I've only heard snippets on iTunes. I want to see the movie first because I usually enjoy listening to a soundtrack in the context of the film. My favorite is the mash-up of We Built this City and We're Not Gonna Take It.

My thoughts on the upcoming box office weekend. Madagascar 3 had a very strong debut in its initial wekeend with an estimated $60 million for its first three days and will be a strong contender to repeat as box office champ. Prometheus also had a strong start with an estimated $50 million initial weekend, but will not challenge for #1.

Tom Cruise had a big hit with MI: Ghost Protocol, but I am not sure how many people will go to see his latest movie and his role as a rock star. I predict that Rock of Ages will disappoint. I grew up during that era and my interest in the movie is minimal...can't see current audiences rushing in mass to see it.

Adam Sandler might have been a solid box office performer for many years and That's my Boy is closer to his comedic roots, but a blockbuster? It should be Madagascar 3 repeating as box office champ.

The only one I am interested in see in the theater is Madagascar 3. I will definitely rent rock of age when it comes out on BD. It's just not theater worthy. Of all the bands that have music in the movie, I remember seeing most of them in concert. I wish I still had my cassette tapes

I'll be seeing both movies when they came out I like Sandler, as I'm one of the only people who doesn't seem to hate the guy anymore.

I'm rooting for Rock of Ages, but I really think Sandler will pull it off again.

I do loathe Adam Sandler, but to his credit, at least this new film of is looks like it is cold and callous, and has a hard-R bite. I doubt I'll see it, but it looks to be the least intolerable film he has ever done, besides Punch-Drunk Love (and I do like Andy Samberg).

Madagascar 3 will win again and there isn't going to be any big box office hits for a few weeks until Spidey.

depends on your definition of "big". Brave will do at least $50M+. Other than that, however, you're probably right. Stuff like Ted will likely make some money, but nothing huge until Spider-Man.

If Brave opens up with a sub-$67m weekend, then it will be among the three worst opening weekends for Pixar (when adjusted for inflation).

well of course not! There have only been like 20 of those in all of movie history. There were only two in all of last year. You talk like a couple of weeks between them is a long time.
