None of the 3 reviewed BR movies have Dolby trueHD and DTS HD. Instead they have something called PCM 5.1.

I mean Blu-Ray will have Dolby trueHD and DTS HD, right?

Thanks

Yeah, I don't like the sound of PCM. PCM sounds like **** compared to DD and DTS.

PCM does 5.1? I thought PCM did no more than 2.1. That is lame.

??? PCM is uncompressed digital audio. DD and DTS are compressed digital audio.

The 5.1 channel PCM on Blu-Ray is the equivalent of the DVD-Audio format. The advantages of Dolby True-HD, and DTS HD are that they use less space than PCM, not that they will sound better (they should sound equivalent to PCM).

Default Hmmm!

I bought the Fifth element dvd after having best buy connect the bd player to my tv and play it. I found that fifth element looks completly perfect on the KDFE50A10 granted it is only 1080i. HDMI BABY!

yeah but it doesn't look all that much better than the normal superbit dvd version which is what people are upset about. it should look absolutely stunning in hd.

It might not actually be the movies that look bad. One of the problems is the HDMI output on the Samsung player. For some reason, just like the Toshiba HD-DVD player, the component out looks WAY better. As for PCM, I think it only sound bad when you take a Dolby or a DTS source and convert it to PCM (like how some players have the PCM output).

What the hell?

I'm not doubting your word, that's just the first time I've run across someone writing that flat out like that.

I wonder why?...

could be many things. Even depending on what kind of component and HDMI cable you have or how the processing is done on your tv.

This is supposed to be 1080p? Just who does Sony think they are fooling?

I just find it extremely hard to believe that a studio that has mastered their films in HD for over 10 years now would release crappy looking films, especially on the first release. I have heard many reports of the HDMI issue, but no one seems to be trying the component output except for a few. And the few that have tried it have said it looks much better. Except for the person in that one review nyg posted.

What does the HDMI have to do with anything?

Anyway, I saw an article that someone asked Samsung about their thoughts on the negative reviews, and they said it is because the BR player is too powerful for current HDTVs.

That has got to be the worst response from a company ever...

As for the HDMI, supposedly, when using the HDMI output, it doesn't display all shades of color. I have no clue what would cause that, but it's like that with the Toshiba HD-DVD player. So when you switch to using the component cables, all shades are there and the picture looks much more colorful and vibrant. I've also heard people say that the picture is sharper when using the component cables, which is also just like the Toshiba HD-DVD player.

thats very interesting to hear. Remember HDMI is a newer technology its possible that they aren't implementing it correctly.

That sounds like a "Best Buy" answer.

I fully support this post.
I don't think there's any plans yet for PCM to support 7.1, but I could be wrong, whereas the DTS-HD and Dolby True-HD should support lossless uncompressed 24/96 audio into 7.1 through HDMI1.3
That will be sweet - in the meantime you're absolutely right, people should be all over the PCM 5.1 which is DVD-Audio quality.
Amen.
