Default Blu-ray, HD-DVD, PS3, and LotR

I haven't been into console games since the Nintendo 64. The only DVDs I've ever had much interest to purchase are The Lord of the Rings. So I'm not one that has spent lots of money in these arenas.

Yet, I am practically rabid to purchase a PS3 with HD movie capability.

I'd love to own HD versions of LotR on disc, as well as possible SD versions that would fit on one disc. But, I'm not willing to shell out any more than maybe $200 for an HD-DVD player.

If the PS3 didn't have HD capability, I'd likely continue to spend my time away from console gaming. But, throw in HD LotR and I'm ready to spend $600.

I've heard that LotR will likely be released on Blu-ray, but I've not seen anything definitive. It has been advertized to be released on HD-DVD.

I won't purchase a PS3 if I can't watch LotR on it, and I won't purchase an HD-DVD-only unit for more than $200. I want both.

Sony has a huge advantage for someone like me, bundling HD movies with the PS3. I'm one that is hoping Blu-ray will win the HD movie format war. But I need to know LotR will be on Blu-ray before I buy.
