Why not add a price drop to boot? Just packing in a disc isn't going to spike sales that much.

Well it depends how you look at it. If it sells at around the same price it is selling now ($429 Amazon) and you deduct the price of the movie, which is a must buy for most Blu-ray owners, you get a $399 sony player. This does not mean that the price may stay at this level.

different view for different people. some might be interested to buy it alone as they already owned BD discs. Some might think that they want to try BD, and this is better deal.

That would be six free movies for this player since the 5-for-free deal has been extended.

If you exclude the possible revenue gained by an extra sale of the movie, it's cheaper for sony to bundle a sony produced product than it is to drop the price.

The cost to sony is the cost of pressing the disk and packaging, which is probably a few dollars at the very most versus a $25 price drop.

That's good and everything, but seeing how HD-DVD players come with 9 friggen movies now, I'm not sure it compares.

put it this way....how many people has seen spiderman? how well did it do at the box office? top 10 of all time maybe? put in a popular movie, not just any popular movie, but one EXCLUSIVE to blu ray. bundle it with the BEST technology has to offer right now...and you get a VERY tempting offer. not a bad marketing strategy if you ask me

Consumers recognize good deals. The savy consumers also recognize "we're so desperate for you to buy our cheap player that we're giving you $250 dollars worth of movies to do it".

To me it sounds like Toshiba is saying, "We know our player isn't quite up to matching Blu-ray. Here's some more free movies to make it up to you."

If low prices and free movies were all it takes, HD-DVD would have won the format war a long time ago.

People who buy these formats are a lot more savvy when it comes to quality over cost. There's still tons of people out there that buy $29.00 DVD players. It's my opinion that people like this would never buy BluRay. They'd buy HD first because of the price.......I'm sure that's what my wife did when she bought(a surprise) me the A20 for my 50th b-day. She probably said to herself that all highdef players are the same so she bought the cheapest one. She wasnt format war knowledgeable so she wouldnt know. She wasnt techno enough to look at the back of the A20 and see that there's no 5.1 multi-channel output or a coaxial output. I didnt have enough coax inputs left on my amp(since replaced) so I had to buy a coax to optical converter($25.00). So I got the Blu player because of the things I've learned here and the fact that it had all the stuff on the back of it that even the $29.00 player has that the A20 didnt see fit to include.
After seeing all these better specs for Blu the savvy consumer will buy BD or wait until BD prices drop. If they know it's better and are willing to spend a lot more than they used to they'll buy Blu. Blu will really win when the avg. Joe steps up and picks the obviously better format.
