Default The delicate balance of buying Blu-ray discs now

Understanding and accepting that this is a new format, and that due to the 'war' the Blu-ray consortium is in need of pushing titles out as fast as possible, I am still a bit let down at the plain and basic overall packaging of the discs/cases.

I want, and do, support the format with my dollars, but I have yet to see a well designed custom case or method of presentation of a collector's edition release.

Of the movies I purchased on DVD (something like 200+ now), a good portion of them were really well done Collector's Edition cases with enclosed media and intricate artwork throughout.

Examples:
  • Afro Samurai - Multi-fold out jacketed case. Sweet artwork.
  • Broken Saints - Same as above
  • Fight Club - Nice custom mock Parcel case, fold out jacketed case, etc.
  • Lord of the Rings Trilogy - Who doesn't own these?
  • Monty Python Quest for the Holy Grail - Creative case cover with changing (side-side) images
  • Appleseed (Anime) - Extremly nice all metal case covered in sweet, sweet artwork inside and out. All painted on, no shitty paper glued to anything.
  • Terminator 2 - Metal Jacket for case, bunch of goodies inside too, by way of a little book and shit
  • Total Recall - Wicked little all metal case completely round and shaped like the planet Mars. It drops into a cardboard pedestal type thinga-ma-bob to give it a stable spot and normal DVD dimensions.
  • Army of Darkness - Numbered limited edition (1 of 5000)
  • Dune - Same case type as Appleseed

Anyways... if you've seen any of the cases mentioned above or can sort out my rantings, you'll know what I'm talking about.

That said, where's the fancy Blu-ray cases?

That also said, should I/we really be going hard buying up all the movies I/we already own on a fancy DVD, or should I/we wait with the assumption it's only a matter of time before they offer these type of options for Blu-ray.

I really, really, really want to see the Lord of the Rings Trilogy in HD. More so I wish to own it, and to that end I want a sweet set of cases like the DVD ones I have now.

Debate.

They will eventually change I'm sure. Bandai is releasing all of it's anime titles in standard DVD cases with the standard DVD box cover.

When DVD first came out there were a ton of those 1/2 plastic 1/2 paper covers. I dunno, you didn't see much of the "special" shaped cases with american stuff, mostly just anime. I'm sure blu-ray will be the same, there is no set standard, cause if there is Bandai is already breaking it.

Hell I'll take the high definition blu-ray in a brown cardboard case. I dont care about the case material, it doesn't take months to create a case design.

i think the cover design is probably one of the easiest things once they know how the artwork is going to look and if its going to be a special case or not, the main thing that takes months is the transfer and making enough copies to sell and all of the other decisions they have to make

I think the current blu-ray cases are great, really eye-catching which is important for this new format.

The quantity of units being shifted at the moment doesn't justify anything out of the ordinary with packagaing.

Warner seem to be doing a few things with Harry Potter and blade runner colector editions - other than that it's a ll fairly standard right now.

Think about those fancy DVD's you mentioned - how many years was DVD as a format on the market before we started seeing packaging like that??

I actually like all of my cases to be uniform...I don't want any special cases...they take up too much room too.

Although I would like the Die Hard collection to have individual cases...I hope it's not just one big case like it looks.

I like them all to be fairly uniform. If they are a little bit thicker, thats fine, but when you have things sticking out here and there or unusual shapes. I hate the old Warner Snapper Cases. I remember when DVDs first started coming out, people on the internet were complaining that the didn't come in CD cases. Why are they in these big boxes? Some even went to the lengths of sticking all of their DVDs in CD cases and printing inserts for them. I didn't like it when Fox made that stupid Homer shaped box for the Simpson's Season set. I was one of those anal people who sent for the regular box.

I throw all my cases in the trash and just keep all the disks stacked up. That way I can quickly skim through them like playing cards and quickly insert them in the player.

right now they are trying to make sure people are able to distinguish what a blu-ray is, I am sure they dont want to confuse the consumer into thinking its a dvd or another type of media. I think for now that Blue case with the logo on top is all we need

I agree with this, why have a special case? Do you really sit there admiring your cases? seriously? I like things to be neat and tidy, so for me it's nicer to have them be uniform looking. The most important thing for me is that they fit on the rack. I bought a Scarface collectors edition box set last year and it doesn't fit anywhere on a rack (it's about 12" x 8") and was extremely annoying. I don't want giant boxes sitting next to my Blu-ray rack. Just keep the cases the same and gives us fancier stuff on the DISC!

I love our blu cases.

We'll def see it around for quite some time so get used to it

After we dispose of HD-DUD we'll have to compete against SD DVD.
So our brand identity will be well in place.
