Default Definite proof that 30 gigs is not enough for movies

and the proff provided by pirates
oka so here it is

http://www.mininova.org/tor/363990

the movie is the lord of the rings in full 1080p(which is actrualy the 1080i version converted)
The Lord of the Rings:The Return of the King 2003 1080P HDTV
DTS 768K AC3 448K
33 9GB

and that a tv broad cast with crappy bitrates and horriable audio(comparedto what can be offer)

from looking at this even with the audio being compressed im having doughts even 50gig is enouf just for the movie?!?!?!

If you are right I guess it is a good thing that Blu-ray can have a 100GB disk that will be readable by all players via a firmware update. There is also the 200GB that is being developed by Sony.

Ditto, if VC1 or AVC is used, it should fit on HDDVD30 but the audio will probably go the way of TF.

is there a link for that? if that's true, TL51 can eat our dust, and no new players needed to play it... will the 200 GB also be playable VIA firmware update?

The 100GB is suppose to be compatible with a firmware update, but last i heard it was not going to be used for movies, only computer drives. And the 200GB is been tested but nothing has been released about being sold in the market.

darn, if they use 100 GB for movies, all movies and extras could be encoded at 48 Mb/s with the AVC codec, and uncompressed Audio, and if it is as simple as a firmware update, why not? Plus it'd nuke HD-DVD can you imagine how many layers HD-DVD would need to reach 100 GB? and it'd probably need new players for that :P

Here is yet another link, although this one states the firmware upgrade is all that would be needed. The second article makes a comment regarding the 100GB not being used for movies right away they do not say that it will not ever be used. I am sure the manufacturing costs are high but given time they will come down.

I think there will be some pretty severe issues with BD200 on current players, apparently the laser needs to be pretty powerful to penetrate 7 layers without getting completely eaten up by refraction, not sure that current 405nm lasers in blu-ray players were built with that in mind =(

The 200GB is 6 layers. I'll see if i find the link. Someplaces say 8 some 6.
Here it is, straight from the Lions mouth, the 200GB is 6 layers making each layer 33GB

Even with blu-ray, I would think LOTR would come on one disc, the extras on a seperate disc. hddud versions would likely be way more compressed and with only dolby 5.1 and maybe commentary.

if they change the layer size I see it having the same compatibility problem that TL51 is likely to have.

From what i've read the issues with compatibility and incompatability seems to be conflicting depending on the sources you read.

Hitachi seems to be fairly certain that their 100gb is DEFINATELY compatible given a firmware upgrade, which is a lot more certain than what can be said for TL51.

I think it's possible they would have to split the last one onto two discs, the extended edition that is. It's around 250 minutes long.

Lol, I don't know for sure and I can't be bothered downloading 30gbs to find out

I'm just assuming its 30gb Mpeg2 since its ripped from a HD broadcast.

Just a guesstimate, anyone know the bitrate of a decent HD broadcast?

Yeah but with hd-dvd, you could go shopping for orc sword replicas while watching the movie.
