Check the resolution setting and make sure it is the best your TV will support. Also check on your TV what resolution it is being fed from the PS3.

I was getting crappy resolution and it turned out to be a bad HDMI cable. Swapped in a good one and now it looks beautiful.

When you set up the initial configuration did you check the maximum resolution for your displays. For example if you did not select 1080p or even 720p then you are probably outputting at 480 something.

Try using a Blu-Ray movie instead of a blue ray image

so does you tv have hdcp ? else, ps3 will only output 480i picture.
27" so should be 720p, did you set ps3 to output in that resolution ?

I own a 32" Sharp Aquos that supports 1080p 10,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio and I love my tv. In my opinion, that's the best bedroom size tv on the market today. I recommend you getting one. It's a bit pricey but financing is available
