The Lone Ranger

Quote:
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer spoke with IGN about the upcoming "The Lone Ranger," which he says will star Johnny Depp as Tonto, but he has yet to cast anyone as the title character.

When asked about the rumor that George Clooney might play the Lone Ranger, Bruckheimer responded: "We don't know. We have a script. We haven't given it to anyone. We're still working on it."

He later added that he would want to hear the fans voice their opinions of whether Clooney is the right man for the job or should another actor be cast instead.

Regarding the tone of the film, Bruckheimer said: "I think it'll have a supernatural element to it. It's the same writers as 'Pirates' and it'll have a similar kind of thing to it."

I loved seeing re-runs of the tv show growing up. If Zorro can be made into a movie so can the Lone Ranger.

Mike Newell is in talks to direct The Lone Ranger:

Quote:
Mike Newell is "in talks" to take the reigns of Lone Ranger. Newell, who previously directed Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, is currently finishing Prince of Persia for Disney.

There's not much else we currently know about Disney's version of The Lone Ranger, except that the script was written by Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio (of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies previously) and it's being produced by Jerry Bruckheimer (so expect something quite big). I've been anxious to get a glimpse of Prince of Persia, because that'll be the determining factor on if I continue to think of him as a great director.

Many of you might be wondering what Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy director Gore Verbinski has planned next. He is wrapping up production on the computer animated film Rango, and it doesn’t look like the Bioshock movie adaptation is going to happen. Word has it that Verbinski might again reteam with Johnny Depp on a big screen adaptation of The Lone Ranger.

Deadline is reporting that Verbinski is in talksfor the job over at Walt Disney Pictures. No word on when production is being targeted to begin.

The Burbank-based movie company is set to have a big press event later this week, and it is completely possible that this news was going to be announced at the event by studio chairman Rich Ross, but may have leaked early.

The project was initially announced in 2007, with producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Pirates of the Caribbean/Shrek screenwriters Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio penning the script. A year later, in 2008, it was revealed that Johnny Depp had been cast as Tonto, and George Clooney was rumored to be in talks to play the title character. Last summer it was rumored that Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Donnie Brasco, Prince of Persia) was in talks to direct, which clearly isn’t happening now. And in February, the mouse house hired Justin Haythe, who adapted Revolutionary Road, to pen a draft. Haythe was most recently working with Walt Disney Pictures on 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Captain Nemo before a recent change in staff put the project in the trash.

Adapted from the 1930’s radio show, which later became a popular live-action television show in the 1950’s. The Lone Ranger is a masked Texas Ranger in the American Old West, who gallops about righting injustices, usually with the aid of a clever and laconic American Indian sidekick called Tonto, and his horse Silver. He would famously say “Hi-yo Silver, away!” to get the horse to gallop. Hollywood has tried to remake the Lone Ranger twice now, a 1981 film titled The Legend of the Lone Ranger and a 2003 WB television movie/pilot, both of which were not well accepted.

Interesting. I'm up for it

The rumors of Depp as Tonto suggested the early treatments were going to play the sidekick as a tribe-rejected half-breed who had no place of his own but to follow his loyal kemosabe--
Thus PC playing-down the obvious "Whaddya mean 'we', white man?" jokes that would've otherwise erupted.

Which seems a smart way of doing it, although I can only hope it looks as good as that awful 1981 version.

I still think that decision, if accurate, is going to get a lot of flack. The one thing that the original TV series did right was having Jay Silverheels play Tonto. A white man playing Tonto, even if playing a half-breed, is going to enrage many people as being racist. They would have been better off having
Depp play The Lone Ranger or a villain.

When I was about five, there was a rodeo at the old Madison Square Garden and Clayton Moore, who played the Lone Ranger on TV appeared. I had my picture taken with him, which I still have (and a 3D stereo slide). He was a great looking and very tall guy (my father was 6 foot, but next to Clayton Moore, he looked like a wuss), but his outfit was a blue tight knit that looked to me like dancer's tights. That freaked me out.

Disney is going for star power with Depp and there unfortunately there is not native American star near Depp. Also Depp is a self identified Cherokee. Really he is as close as you can get and keep star power.

Seriously--What a waste of good location cinematography and John Barry score:

Well, that's just it--
Depp CLAIMS to be half native, although whether Cherokee or Navajo has never been determined from one interview to another.

The two 50's TV features are now playing Instant Netflix, btw, for those who missed the Clayton Moore reruns.

(And just on the basis of two episodes, I'm beginning to side with Bill Cosby: "Tonto, don't go to town!"

Though it’s still a ways off, we know that, eventually, Gore Verbinski will direct a Jerry Bruckheimer-produced, Disney version of The Lone Ranger starring Johnny Depp as Tonto. But you can’t have Tonto without the title character himself and now The Wrap has learned that Ryan Gosling is in preliminary talks to scream “Hi-yo Silver!”

The Wrap exclusively broke this news but, as Gosling has already committed to shoot Logan’s Run this fall, there’s a chance of a scheduling conflict. Verbinski has been quoted as saying he doesn’t think the film will be ready to shoot until 2012 though and, if that’s the case, Gosling should be available.

As for Depp, he’ll be busy promoting Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides for a while then once again team up with director Tim Burton for Dark Shadows. After that, he could be ready to shoot The Lone Ranger, if the script is ready and Verbinski hasn’t committed to something in the meantime. He’s currently looking at options.

What we know about this version of The Lone Ranger is slightly different. The Lone Ranger, though the title character, isn’t necessarily the main character. Here’s what Verbinski said about it a few months back:

Quote:
The only version of ‘The Lone Ranger’ I’m interested in doing is ‘Don Quixote’ told from Sancho Panza’s point of view… And hence I was honest early on with Johnny that Tonto is the part. We’re not going to do it [straight], everyone knows that story. I don’t want to tell that story.
The whole scenario is certainly not being rushed by Disney or Bruckheimer. They seem to know they have a potential franchise starter on their hands and they want to treat it with care. Even in The Wrap’s article, they predict The Long Ranger won’t hit screens until 2014.

Do you think Gosling would play a good foil to Depp?
Source

That's actually a really interesting choice. I could see it working really well. I'm interested in seeing how this progresses.

Gosling is a great actor. He disappears into roles all the time, I could honestly see him as the Ranger. He'd be great with Johnny Depp I think. And what does any of this have to do with Logans Run?

I agree Gosling really gets into his roles, I think he could be great in this. On a side note I can't wait till I finally get a chance to see Blue Valentine.

Well, Hollywood has been remaking movies since the 30s. I mean, I think we all complain about it. But when was the last time we saw The Lone Ranger? It's been a long time. This is due another movie and doesn't seem nearly as unncessary as something like Superman which is getting rebooted again. But that's just my personal opinion.

As for Gosling, as I've said, he has never given me reason to think he can't pull it off. Every movie I've ever seen him in he's been great. He's an incredible actor. So I look forward to seeing him in something that he hasn't really done before.

Yea, I really want to see Blue Valentine as well. I never got a chance to see it when it came out here. But this makes me want to rewatch Remember the Titans since Gosling is in it.

Doesn't matter who is cast in the role of the Lone Ranger. With Depp cast as Tonto, it's obvious this is another vehicle for Depp. I say the Lone Ranger plays the secondary character here. In any case, I'm looking forward to this. Love the old series and I even liked the really cheesy and campy and crappy 1981 film. Oh and i'm not too thrilled about Depp and Gosling starring in the roles.
