Under, although I think that Deadline estimate of $12 - $17 million opening weekend is a studio planted sandbag estimate.

Way under. The older audience still hasn't returned to the theaters, the younger audience doesn't seem interested, the ads have been doing their best to hide the fact that it's a musical, and word is getting out about the lack of subtitles.
Locally (Memphis), there are ten screens with a 7:15pm show on Thursday night, with a grand total of TWO tickets sold, one on one screen, one on another, zero tickets sold on the other eight. The IMAX isn't having Thursday night previews, choosing instead to keep the anime Sword Art Progressive on the big screen one more night. Sword Art's Thursday night show currently has 13 tickets sold, after being here for a full week. The Friday night West Side Story opening night show has ten tickets sold, of a capacity around 300. OW... $12 million. |

Truly hope America doesn’t do Spielberg dirty like that. We ask him to get back to his “fun, entertaining” roots and then we don’t support him when he does?
I’ll use up all three of my AMC A-List slots for the most expensive ticket if I need to. Really, I’ll do it. ![]() |

But hey, things are looking up: checked again just now, Memphis now has five tickets sold for ten screens tonight. Ouch. |

Hopefully older audiences and women embrace it. It should help that it’s a known IP and is getting great reviews. Also it’s the best time of the year to release a film like this. Families will be looking for something to watch and this looks like a good adult movie that could appeal to different ages. If it can make a third of what Ready Player One made, during a pandemic no less, it would be a pretty decent success. I think it’ll have legs and make money throughout the month and into awards season. |

I think presales and Thursday night preview shows are more of an indicator of how a big event Marvel film will do.
Only 21.5% of tickets sold are from online purchases. So roughly 4 out of 5 movie tickets sold are still from walk up. Either at a kiosk or from a theater employee. The study was conducted in 2019. https://www.forbes.com/sites/scottme...udy-shows/amp/ |
