Default Hard coating - would you trust Sony enough? ;)

hi the other day i was on the sony site and it said blu-rays could resist attack from a screw driver because of the hard coating (although i did already know this) now since i trust sony i decided to give it a go (i attacked it with a screwdriver) i put the disk in the drive and

it worked fine all the speiceil features menus ect perfect. now i think that is a feat in engineering.

I really think this feature should be advertised more. People are going to feel better about dropping $30 a movie if they know they're far more durable than other optical disk. Its the kind of thing that might sway some people into getting HDDVD, since virtually everyone will end up spending more on movies than they did on a player.

Its good for rental stores too, less replacements. Better ROI for them, so less incentive to carry HDDVD.

there is a video on you tube that shows a man trying to destroy the br disc to see if itll screw it upi but it works evertime. I think he had to set it on fire in order for it to quit working.

In fact here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5jEbZt6AIQ

I do like to attack my discs with sharp objects. I have found that a tack hammer is a lot of fun, even though it isn't sharp.

If you were a man you would use a gun, just to find the limits of the protective coating.

there is a video on this over the youtube. BD is very dur....
I wouldn't do it to my own BDs though. I trust Sony with all my heart. They made quality products, and I will choose them over the other manufacturer.

Was the hard coating ever standerdized? I know that most disks have it but it did not see if they made it a requirement for all Blu disks to have the coating.

You dont want to advertise something that only works 90% of the time. (even though most companies do)

Don't give them any ideas. Anyone remember the commericial where the kid slid a sandwhich in the VCR? Well, kids started to copy that and parents were threatning law suit.

I think part of the hard coat technology is its super slickness. If no friction is created you technically can't scratch it.

BD has enough great aspects to sell on it's own merit. If they hard coat HD DVD, does it become a better format?

Wow, I like your gusto and believe your results... yet I'm still not ever going to do that.

Well, I don't "trust" anything or anybody.

I prefer Sony over any other electronics manufacturer - TV, VCR(yeah, and it still works!), three(3) Sony VAIOs, a Cybershot camera, two MemorySticks, a couple Walkman(s), Sony Turbo headphones & MDR-J10/BLUE clips, several Sony BDs (several other BDs), various Sony softwares... naw.

Not going to trash my BDs, but it is reassuring to know that I could treat them like s*** and they will still play!

The amount of data being packed on the disc requires it be durable. I challenge anyone to name a disc which doesn't have the coating.

The OLD players had the discs in a carrier unity which were injected into the player. After the hard coating those fell by the wayside. TDK calls it "Durabis". This PR is from 2005 and still lists the max. capacity as 25GB.

really not about being more durable as it is securing the data layers... it's because the first data layer so damn close to the surface that a small scratch would render your disc useless...

Good point. I still handle all my discs by the edge. Not that I don't trust Sony or Blu.

I too handle all my discs on the edge...don't like getting oil from my fingertips on the surface. It makes me feel about like someone touching my TV or computer screens.
