Default Blu-ray/DVD Combo Packs...thoughts?

This has probably been run into the ground here on the forum in the past, but I'm still curious to as to what others think about these.

I guess that, with me, the Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack served its intended purpose. For the longest time, I simply thought of Blu-rays as a stopgap format before the inevitable increased feasibility of efficient online streaming movie options (although I still prefer having a physical possession in my hand). I simply continued buying DVDs, assuming that they were the safe physical format option indefinitely.

My favorite 2012 movie, The Grey, was a movie that I rushed out to buy on the day of release, though, and the store that I visited only had the Blu-ray/DVD Combo. I purchased this combo pack, and proceeded to enjoy the DVD disc with repeat viewings. That Blu-ray on the other side of the pack, though, was always the white elephant in my collection. Just how much better would this movie look on Blu-ray? I also owned the Combo of The Tree of Life, having received it as a Christmas gift last year, and was intensely curious to see that movie in high definition.

I eventually grabbed Blu-ray/DVD Combo Packs of John Carter, Jaws, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Lawless, Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein, and a handful of others. Each time, the curiosity about the Blu-ray disc gave me pause.

Now that I'm Blu-ray equipped, I am glad that I already had a small collection of Blu-rays right out of the starting gate due to the combo packs.

I suppose the purpose of these combo packs are to lure people who are sitting on the fence, just as I was. For all of you who also own Blu-ray players, though, what do you think about the combo format now?

I still like having the extra DVD disc around, since I can let friends borrow the DVD disc if I want to spread the word about a great film, and I can also play the DVD on a laptop. These days, though, I'll pay less money for a Blu-ray Only package if that's an option.

The DVDs are useless to me. I once let someone borrow a DVD from a combo pack and she brought it back with finger prints all over it.

I'm cool with it if it's in there but don't seek it out, that is I won't pay more for it. However, if the sale version I pick up has a DVD in there, more power to it. I'm not one of these "DVD is so foul, it won't touch my eyes ever again" types on this forum. I have DVD players in other parts of my house, and like you said, always good to lend out.

You're going to get lit up for not using the search function, but I have no issue with re-visiting a past topic, especially since you clearly put some thought into it and articulate your points well.

I really only use the DVD copies when I am travelling, so I do like to have them around. Not really on topic but I would rather have a digital copy then a DVD copy so I could just put the DC on my laptop without bringing a physical disc a long.

DVDs should be excluded from BD packaging unless you're talking about kids/family movies then they do serve a purpose.

Agreed. We use the DVDs for long car rides in the van. Nothing else

They are ****ing annoying and need to go away.

It's like buying the latest PC game and getting a Nintendo 64 cartridge of the same game bundled in. Uhh, wtf?

Or buying a CD and it comes bundled with the cassette version...

You make a good point there, but not everyone as kids. So by that same logic, if I want to watch a PG-13 or R rated film on the road, I can, because the DVDs and DCs aren't limited to kids' films.

Not at all the same. Terrible analogy. Major difference being most places have a means of playing DVDs still, whereas no cars are made with cassette players anymore, and PC has nothing to do with Nintendo.

I don't get why people care when a DVD is include.
If you don't want it, sell it off, but then they complain that the package won't be complete, then why are you complaining about it? Get over it, there's more important things to cry about, like not getting a slipcover.

Cassette tapes are apparently back in fashion with the hipsters, because I've seen a few indie bands issuing cassette-only limited edition singles and such at concerts. This astounds me to no end, but it's going on.

Thankfully, DVDs are still a viable format, and will probably continue to be viable, for those of us who own DVDs when the respective movie is not yet available on Blu-ray.

I usually loan the DVDs out, but I'm much more careful with my blu rays. I don't care if the DVDs came back or not.

For me, I find the bluray and DVD combo a waste of money for studios. I don't use the DVDs that come with it. I think money can be saved by not including the DVD in the package for studios. While it would be much since they get huge discounts straight from the supplier. Now, I do understand some still do like the combo, but I think having less of these combos and more of the bluray only, bluray- digital copy or 3D-bluray-digital copy in bigger quantities is a better way to go. Not everyone has a bluray player or a tv that play the HD content in HD. And for those that do have these HD equiptment have already made their decision about the bluray over DVD. There are already enough bluray-DVD combos out thereto help people see the light for why one should go to bluray over DVD. Who knows it might bring the cost of bluray only down a couple of dollars for the average person.

Ahhhh. Thank you!

For those interested, this thread can be purchased as a stand-alone for $17.99, but also as a Combo Pack with the other thread links also included for $21.99.

*Clears throat.* blu-ray girl fan makes a good point that I could have looked up these old threads with minimal effort. I figured that the annoyance factor of bumping an old thread would equal the annoyance factor of starting a new one.

It's possible to Search each sub-forum.

https://forum.blu-ray.com/search.php?f=31

With the relevant keyword (in this case "combo" or "DVD"), threads that already exist can be found.

It took me the same amount of time to Search as it did for you to post.

I know how to use the search function. I'm not the one creating repeat threads. It's just that one person always being the same one to post links to old threads is funny.
